Guernsey Van Riper, Jr. attended DePauw University in 1926. He earned two varsity letters as quarterback on the football team and one letter as a first baseman on the baseball team. After graduating, he worked in advertising then became an editor at Bobbs-Merrill Publishing Company. He turned his love of sports into books, writing biographies of Lou Gehrig and Knute Rockne along with ten other children’s books.

This was for my son's book report so we read it together. He certainly learned a lot and since he is interested in playing baseball it kept his attention. The only problem-- *spoiler alert* -- is that from this book he learned the truth about Santa. *Tear

I checked this book out from my school library when I was 10 years old in 1958. It was the very first book that I had ever read. A wonderful story that embodies the American experience of many of our ancestors-who were successful in their own endeavors.

This book covers the childhood of Lou Gehrig, with little discussion of his years as a Yankee. It is a good starting point for youngsters already familiar with Gehrig's baseball accomplishments, as it describes the poverty and difficulties of his upbringing. The child should already ubderstand Gehrig's baseball on field accomplishments and his heroism in the face of his incurable disease for the book to have the greatest impact.
THis is a good book for baseball fans all over. It's more of a kid's book, but it's got great info. It even has his "luckiest man in the world" speech in it!
My 10-year-old son greatly enjoyed this classic story of Lou Gehrig's childhood. It is an engaging story of inspiration and hard work. However, there is a Santa spoiler in the first chapter that could create a very big problem for some younger children and their beliefs. I
