Ancient-Future Faith: Rethinking Evangelicalism for a Postmodern World

From Publishers Weekly

For much of his career, theologian and worship consultant Webber (Evangelicals on the Canterbury Trail; Worship Is a Verb) has been inviting evangelicals to rediscover their connection with historic Christianity. Here, Webber takes up his case with a new urgency, warning that American evangelicalism's historical rootlessness and acculturation to modernity leave it dangerously unprepared to deal with postmodern culture and to reach postmodern souls. But there is hope: even in its thornier aspects (e.g., pluralism, state indifference/hostility, learned skepticism and popular credulity), the postmodern climate resembles the environment in which the ancient Church not only endured but thrived. This book makes an important contribution, not so much as a cultural analysis (Webber's treatment of modernity and postmodernity makes no claims for depth or originality, and his proclamation of modernity's demise seems premature) but as a call for theological renewal within evangelical churches. Webber provides a wealth of suggestions to help churches appropriate the heritage of "classical Christianity" for use in contemporary settings, including the renewal of sacraments and the church year, reconnecting evangelism with discipleship (as in classical catechesis) and a "rule of faith" ecumenism that emphasizes catholic creeds and de-emphasizes denominational confessions. Webber correctly anticipates the inevitable questions about authority, Scripture and tradition that his proposals will raise for evangelicals. Although he may underestimate the uneasiness that many evangelicals still feel about "Catholic-sounding" concepts and practices, Webber's call for an "ancient-future" faith is timely, practical and persuasive. From Library Journal

These two books together give an excellent overview of the past development, present objectives, and future possibilities of American evangelical Christianity. Balmer (Ann Whitney Olin Professor of religion, Barnard) traces the origins of evangelicalism from its beginnings (in the Second Great Awakening) to the present. He points out its broad popular appeal and sees its greatest strength as its willingness to use the latest communication techniques in each era. He also discusses current political and moral struggles. Looking toward the future, Webber attempts to reconcile evangelicalism with postmodern philosophy. Returning to the traditions of the very early church, the author attempts to show how such ancient paradigms as the "Christus Victor" concept as well as nonverbal communications through symbolism could revitalize the evangelical message in an age moving away from linear, verbal thinking. Both books are well written and readable scholarly works with some interesting insights into this important segment of religion in America. Recommended for academic and public libraries.AC. Robert Webber's books are great; I think at this point I have read all of them. They present an interesting analysis of the current woes that plague the Protestant Church. One thought that is persistent in his books yet is never spelled out is this: "Guys, we made a mistake. The Orthodox have been right all along."There are a few things that are rather thin in most of his writings. He underscores the concept of 'Christus Victor' yet never shows how this concept was actualized in history. Christ's victory over the powers of evil? This he never spells out, for he'd have to go deeply unto the teachings of the Classical Church, dismantle all those theories of Atonement, which would clash with the teachings of the modern Protestantism. The other area that is also weak in his books is music. In everything else, he pushes the envelope; however, in regards to music his ideas are rather dusty. Not to worry, church musicians with brains and imagination will take it from here. Besides, if theology could be cycled back to the first six centuries of the Classical Christianity, why not music? Lucky are the Orthodox - they don't have to "cycle" anything.

If you are looking for a way to transform your church's worship to reach today's post modern society, this is your answer. Webber's Ancient Future Faith is a guide book for the church to get out of entertainment and back into substantial worship of the ancient church. Well written and a book you will definitely highlight and write in. I used this book in my Worship 101 class in college and it has changed my views on worship forever!

. . .causes you to stop, stare out the window, and think about what God might be saying to you through the words of a gifted author. Ancient-Future Faith has been one of those books for me. It may not be for everyone, but for me it was a book that I could not read in a hurry. It put so many things together for me that are so significant for the church in the postmodern 21st century. At the same time I was reading this book, the minister of worship and music in my congregation was finishing a doctor of ministries degree with Robert Webber as one of the professors. His D.Min. project related to developing a new worship motif for our congregation. So much of what Webber says was coming alive to me in the worship services in my congregation. From reading this book I now know that the dominant worldview of congregations who make it to the end of the 21st century will be postmodern. Modern congregations will no logner exist. Very few new congregations need to be started from now forward with a modern worldview. That category is already full. The leading innovative and effective congregation of the second decade of the 21st century will primarily be congregations that were started after 1992.One more thing: as you read this book, look closely. It caused me to rethink some perspecttives I have always had on the Reformation.

Excellent book. Slow reading to absorb /process content. I have recommended the book to multiple friends.

...informative and so refreshing!

I read this back for a class back in 2004. I do not remember everything that he wrote but one point sticks out and that is the author's total lack of knowledge in the area of history and total lack of trust in the sufficiency of the scriptures. He wants so badly to be "relevant" and "postmodern" but lacks the trust in the sovereignty of God. We do not need to be relevant what we need is to practice what the apostles did in Acts and just preach the word. In my own evangelism efforts on the streets this is what I do. I trust in the sovereignty of God and the sufficiency of the scripture and therefore I find no reason to overcomplicate things as Webber does in my efforts to reach a lost dying world. I am saddened that professors would use this book in college. The Emerging Church would love this book so I can only recommend two books. The Truth War by John MacArthur-- PostModernism is not our friend but the enemy of truth. The total opposite of what Webber believes.Tell the Truth by Will Metzger-- An in-depth look at evangelism that is used in many seminaries.

This book has all ready been splendidly reviewed, but I felt I may have a few things to note. The author is a professor, and the book is written as such. People seeking "warm fuzzies" from reading a book about rediscovering classical Christianity are not going to find it here. They will instead find a powerful look at the way that classical Christianity can be drawn upon to reenergize the church, specifically the evangelical church, and make it a more dynamic force in the world as the body of Christ. Very highly recommended.

I enjoyed Robert Webber's book and have enjoyed hearing him speak as well. At a recent speaking engagement he echoed my own concern over the "fate" of the church in America. So much "commodification" has happened in the church that one wonders if anyone knows what it truly means to be "ecclesia"? Although I agree with much of what he says and am part of a liturgical church (The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod which utilizes the church calendar and has had a strong emphasis on liturgy - - - the church body which Webber received his doctorate from), my question is are we truly called to "change" the church in order to meet the people where they are at?I agree with his assessments yet I question the reasonings behind doing it. Do we begin to emphasize certain things to the demise of others, just because the culture would be more "prone" to come to the church? Or does the church remain faithful to its calling despite the changing tides of culture? Our self-centered culture always asks the question "What does this mean for me?", and this has been a active question in the church for sometime. I believe the question that we should be asking is how does God give meaning to me, or what do I mean to God? Our focus needs to be off of ourselves and onto the Lord of the cosmos.

I know some people who are treating this book as if it were the newest book of the Bible. Well, in fairness, it does contain some significant revelations, and it's a tale of good and evil. That's the good news. The bad news is that the book is (a) extremely disjointed and (b) full of extraneous information, some of it personal and some seemingly irrelevant. Thus, the book is longer than it should be, and the extraneous information muddles things up for no good reason. The basic story that Lewis tells is good; it's got good guys and not-so-good guys, financial chicanery and other things (sorry, no sex) that would be interesting on their own. And he certainly has a point - that our market system is rigged (a point with which I'm inclined to agree). But then he distracts us with lots of techno-jargon; the story of Goldman Sachs's role in prosecuting someone for stealing what seems to be public data that's of little use to him; and a weird discussion at the end about women bikers. (In fairness, the prosecution is not entirely irrelevant, but Lewis seems to be unsure whether to use it as a paradigm for Goldman's intrinsic evil or good, so it turns out to be unnecessary.)I've never been a big fan of Lewis; he's always struck me as being inordinately impressed with his own cleverness (not that he's not clever), and this book doesn't do anything to dispel my prejudices.Lastly, it's interesting (but another disappointment) that while Lewis praises his copy editor, I caught two rather obvious typos early on. I know he's a ragingly successful author, but really!

If you have been watching economic news this week, you will have heard that the British pound collapsed in a “flash crash.” Most news stories leave it at that. (I suspect that’s because they don’t know what a flash crash really is.) Put simply (and in Flash Boys Michael Lewis explains this recurring phenomenon quite simply) a flash crash is how high frequency traders use computers, multiple exchanges and time to abuse the rules. Now that I’ve summarized that, let me back up a second and deconstruct the sentence. First, what are the rules? In 2007, after brokers were found to have been abusing customers’ trust once too often, the government came out with what’s called Reg NMS. This regulation (and here I am just going to quote Michael Lewis directly because I don’t think I can say it any better than he did). Reg NMS mandated that brokers buy shares at the best price. “To define best price, Reg NMS relied on the concept of the National Best Bid and Offer. If an investor wished to buy 10,000 shares of Microsoft, and 100 shares were offered on the BATS exchange at $30 a share, while the full 10,000 listed on the other twelve exchanges were offered at $30.01, his broker was required to purchase the 100 shares at Bats before moving on to other exchanges.”This meant that anyone with a computer can see where a purchase is going to be made and for how much. So if you have a faster connection (and several exchanges where you can sell a few shares of a stock, you can already see how you can make money.) Sure, you won’t make a lot of money from any one trade. Maybe less than half a cent here and half a cent there. But that adds up. I know this from first-hand experience. The other day at work, I was trying to calculate what would the cost be of a service was excluded from a package of services. And my calculation kept being almost a billion off. I did it and re-did and re-did it every which way I could think of. I even pulled down my stats book to see if my math was off. Nothing. I got up and went for a cup of coffee just to take a break from this ridiculous problem and when I sat down again, I saw it. It was a rounding error. To be exact it was a rounding error in the one/thousandth decimal place. But I was dealing with billions of dollars and that rounding error made quite a difference. So yes, parts of pennies add up. But wait, there’s more. The way the best price is computed is when an exchange computes all the bids and offers on a particular stock. This computation is done by a government computer and if you know one thing about government, you will know that it takes years to upgrade computers. That means that if you have your own, faster computer you can “front-run” the official best price and sell and buy 100s of shares at the “real” best price. Sure it will be a “rounding error” but as I said before, those rounding errors matter. So a rule that was intended to create equity and transparency in the market in fact institutionalized inequality between the traders who had access to the super-fast computers and those who did not. Only the former would make money from these rounding errors. But wait, there is yet more. To make full use of Reg NMS you also need many different exchanges or dark pools and dark cables. And guess what, both exist. Dark cables are cables that are optimized for speed of transaction. Sure it’s a millisecond difference or even less but in that time you can get a lot of rounding errors. Dark pools are, in essence, proprietary exchanges. They exist to make it easier for institutional investors (like the folks to whom you entrust your pension and mortgage, for example) to trade in large blocks. So, for example if you have one million shares of Microsoft you want to sell (or buy) but don’t want your identity known, you would rather sell/buy those shares away from the glaring eye of the public transaction. Here’s the problem, if your are a high frequency trader, you (by definition) have a super-fast computer and access to dark cables. That means you can “ping” the many, many dark pools that have been set up. By some estimates, 40% of all trading is now done inside dark pools. And that in turn means you can know, well before the government-issued slow computers have finished calculating the best price what the real selling price is. That’s one heck of a rounding error in your pocket. And finally, to make all this work, you need volatility. All volatility means is that the price of something moves up and down a lot. And obviously if it does that, there is a lot more room for a high-frequency trader to essentially insert him/herself in the middle of that trade. Basically here’s the way it works. You want to buy those 10,000 shares of Microsoft for $30. There’s a dark pool that will sell 100 of them to you for that price. I, as a high-frequency trader, ping that dark pool, know what the price you’re willing to buy for is and all the other prices out there and where you will buy from next. So I go and buy the next batch of Microsoft shares that are selling (as you will recall at $30.01). Now, your broker, by law, has to come and buy the shares from me. Except I sell the shares now at $30.1001. And right there, in less than the blink of an eye I have made almost $10. And that’s from a mere 9,900 shares—a small trade. So what high-frequency traders do in effect is charge a tax for trading. And that tax (like most taxes) makes economic activity, in this case people’s willingness to trade to decrease. It also means that flash crashes, caused when a front-running computer algorithm gets too clever by half, are inevitable. In Flash Boys, Lewis explains all of this a little at a time. In some ways, the book reads like a great detective story. And like a great detective story, it is eminently readable because at its heart is a kind of hero: Brad Katsuyama. Brad sets out to hire a lot of computer programmers to beat the system. First he introduced Thor. This was a platform that enabled you to trade more slowly and then a brand new exchange called IEX (an exchange—and yes, it got the license to be an actual exchange) that did the same thing. The idea behind Thor and IEX seems counter-intuitive but in a high-frequency world it works. If you trade many thousands of shares per trade, then it makes sense that your order should arrive at all the exchanges/dark pools at the same time. That way no-one can ping/front-run you. You will not, in other words, be paying a tax on your trade. So to get the high-frequency traders out of the loop, you need to trade just slowly enough that your orders arrive at all exchanges at the same time. This is the story of how Brad and the motley crew he gathered around him came up with that idea, the push-back they initially got from the industry and how they eventually sold the industry, including Goldman Sachs, on the concept. It is a story well worth reading. I highly recommend it.

One of the things I enjoy about Lewis's writing is his ability to explain difficult and complicated subjects. This one on high speed stock trading was no exception. Even though I am in the financial services field, there are aspects of this topic that were totally mystifying. Glad to see I had a lot of company and glad to see steps are being taken to reduce the opportunity to pick your pocket when trading stocks. The techniques may be legal, but they are far from fair or ethical. I think this book is best suited for those with some background in finance or serious investors. An enjoyable read if your interest lies in this direction.

Well, maybe I don't love it. Maybe I like it. I am prejudiced. Michael Lewis is unmatched in being able to explain clearly some of the more complex machinations of the money markets. In this case, the issue is manipulation of the stock market by having better technology..and putting it close to trading floor. OK, I know that does not make much sense on the face of it, but read the book. But it is another way the large, programmatic traders can beat the little guy--and Lewis makes the point without it becoming a Message. The Canadians are heroes (and how often do you read that in a review of a Wall Street subject?) The market is generally unscrupulous. It is unlikely to be fixed (if it is 'fixable') so long as we don't understand it..and most of us do not. Michel Lewis is the guy who can explain everything.

The description is a little unclear but this book is combination of the following five books:-- The Bread Machine Cookbook I-- The Bread Machine Cookbook II-- The Bread Machine Cookbook III-- The Bread Machine Cookbook V: Favorite Recipes from 100 Kitchens-- The Bread Machine Cookbook VI: Hand-Shaped Breads from the Dough CycleTherefore, if you buy this book you will have all of the content of the five individual books listed above.I already owned The Bread Machine Cookbook Volume 1, but I wanted to expand my library with the other books in the series. All of the original volumes were small paperbacks, but this is a traditionally-sized hardcover book.I have included photos of this book and comparison photos of this book and Volume 1 (as an example)In comparing the "Volume 1" section of this book to the paperback Volume 1 I already own, there has only been some minor editing. If you buy this book the only Donna Rathmell German Bread Machine books you will be missing are:-- The Bread Machine Cookbook IV: Whole Grains & Natural Sugarshttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1558670491-- Worldwide Sourdoughs from Your Bread Machinehttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1558670955As for the recipes themselves, there appears to be a great variety. I have enjoyed recipes from Volume 1, so I suspect I will like the recipes from the other volumes as well.I like variety, so I own a few other Bread Machine cookbooks as well. Other books I can recommend are:-- Bread Machine Magic, Revised Edition: 138 Exciting Recipes Created Especially for Use in All Types of Bread Machineshttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/031230496XThe Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook: A Master Baker's 300 Favorite Recipes for Perfect-Every-Time Bread-From Every Kind of Machine-- http://www.amazon.com/Bread-Lovers-Machine-Cookbook-Perfect-Every-Time/dp/155832156X

I got this Big Book of Bread Machine Recipes and my first ever bread machine, a Sunbeam breadmaker 5891, from Amazon almost a month ago, and I am SO pleased about these purchase decisions!Such a BIG and USEFUL book! There are 600 recipes from the author's previous 5 books: Bread Machine Cookbooks 1, 2, 3, 5 (Favorite Recipes from 100 Kitchens), and 6 (Hand-shaped Breads from the Dough Cycle)--this book is so informative for this first-time bread machine owner, has so many different types of recipes/preferences, and is so useful that I simply had to share the "goods" here.Recipes with/without starters or sourdough, pizza crust, bagels, cheese, nuts, whole wheat, rye, cornbread, rolls, coffeecakes, doughnuts, toppings and fillings, international recipes, etc., etc... Unbelievable, I've never had so many recipes-to-try stickers attached to a cookbook! I've baked Pistachio Raisin Bread (twice; used butter), Whole Wheat 1 (once; used milk and honey; added pine nuts), Ricotta Bread (thrice; also added 1 tbl. of unsweetened cocoa powder), Almond Bread (once), and Apple Chunk Bread (twice; used butter, substituted homemade apple sauce and added 1 egg; increased yeast by ½ tsp and decreased salt by ½ tsp; hand shaped & oven-baked). Next, I'll be trying the Hawaiian Sweet Bread. So far, all the loaves have been VERY yummy. My husband, the big-time bread gobbler, and I, the newly no-fuss-just-wipe bread machine baker, have both been sighing with contentment.Regarding the other reviewer's comment about the format of this book--the format is fine. Here is a book that is very functional and will be used FREQUENTLY. (Such straightforward recipes/ingredients producing such delicious bread--wow!) This hardcover book not only has widely diverse recipes/choices, it also has a sturdy {I have the hardcover version} moisture-resistant and wipe-able glossy cover. The recipes are listed for small (1 lb.), medium (1 ½ lb.), and large (2 lb.) loaves. Furthermore, the recipes are not "crammed onto the pages" as the other reviewer claimed; as far as photos go--the last loaf of bread baked by a bread machine tends to look like the 1st loaf, regardless of the recipe/ingredients.Tip: If you want the "looks", or if you enjoyed a bread-machine loaf so much that you're curious about its oven-baked possibilities, don't be afraid to hand shape, let rise in the oven with the oven light on, and then oven-bake the loaf. The loaves made from the Ricotta Bread and the Apple Chunk Bread recipes were so good that I braided part of the dough into four 5 oz. mini-loaves and one large break/pull-apart loaf, brushed with egg-milk glaze, and baked at 350F until golden brown. The oven versions have very thin crusts and a very soft texture. I do like the oven-baked version better than the bread machine-baked version, but not by that great of a margin--considering the work and clean-up. I'd probably only use the oven-baked version for presentations (as gifts to friends). Conclusion:The inspirational recipes and choices really make this book worth its price. If you like to bake/eat a VARIETY of breads with a small amount of fuss, this book (and the bread machine) gives you the freedom to do just that. All the flavors and possibilities--this is a must-have book; get it and enjoy.

I have no caveats about giving this a 5 star review! This is actually the second time I purchased it. I used my first copy so much that some pages fell out (from my carelessness). When my bread machine broke I decided to toss it. After a few months I was really missing my bread machine and bought a new one. It came with some recipes and I bought some more recipe books at a used book store but I really missed this one. Th library had it so I ended up checking it out a few times. I decided I couldn't do without it so ordered it. The condition of the book was great. The rye bread and sweet bread recipes are so good. The layout of the book is great and the recipes are easy to follow, It's the best bread machine recipe book I ever used.

Many, many years ago I had several of the bread machine cookbooks from this author. Those were given away with my old bread machine. I recently purchased a new model machine and missed some of the recipes. I was happy to find this compilation cookbook that has some of my favorites, especially the dark pumpernickel (that I can make without caraway seed).

Best bread machine book ever. Until I got this book, I really didn't like the bread I made in my bread machine, but the recipes are so wonderful that everyone with a bread machine should get this book. My favorites are the honey oat bread and the cinnamon raisin bread. We make bread every day and it is the reason I look forward to lunch everyday.

I LOVE THIS BOOK AND IT DID NOT COME IN THE GREATEST SHAPE. THE RECIPES AREFANTASTIC AND EASY ACCORDING TO THE DONNA RATHMELL GERMAN.THANK YOU AND LOOKING FOR A REVISED EDITION!!

goood

Tons of recipes, including the ones from the first book that I had lost, and missed. Great shape and worth every penny.

Good Spanish high school textbook. I have copies of almost every high school Spanish textbooks and this one, in my opinion, does much better than the others.

It was a little sticky like it was sitting somewhere--it's hard to use because it is so messy.

Was purchased for step daughter because the county we live in is stupid and cheap and refuses to let the kids take the books home so they can actually learn

EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED =)

Good book to learn Spanish.

very good

Outstanding purhase!!! My son had some difficulty with Spanish I, so the summer before Spanish II, I ordered this book so that he could brush up. The exercises and going through the chapter reviews really helped him in Spanish II the following sememster. I am very glad and so was he that I made this purchase. I ordered the student edition as well, so that he could not have answeres until he tested himself. ---would also be great for home-schooled students!

Excellent quality, condition and price. I would definitely recommend this site.
