Satin Cinnabar is a richly detailed story that's part romance, part mystery. Barbara Gaskell Denvil has a unique writing style and presents things in an eloquent and sometimes unexpectedly refreshing way. I particularly liked the dialogue since it wasn't stilted or contrived and appropriate to the time period. The lower class characters are very well portrayed and practically jump off the page.Alex is a well drawn, multi-dimensional character who could be hustler, thief, friend, lover, and devoted cousin all at once. Katherine, on the other hand, was a bit irritating at times. I had to keep reminding myself that this girl was eighteen and not eight. Her page, who was delightful, had more sense and character and his comments always made me smile.I would happily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romance and wants to spend a few hours skulking around the manor houses and back alleys of fifteenth century London.
Alex Quyrril has the misfortune to regain his senses buried under a heap of dead bodies. The battle of Bosworth is over, Richard Plantagenet is dead and Alex faces an uncertain and daunting future. What sort of life can he expect under the Tudor upstart? And so starts a book that has me rushing back home from work to continue reading, just as hooked by charming Alex as I am by the cloak and dagger plot, complete with an unsavoury priest, an absolutely charming page called Tom and tomboy Kate, the most reluctant bride to Alex' new employer. The dialogue is delightful, fast and witty with a clarity of tone that has me hearing voices in my head, Alex' darker timbre intermingled with Kate's anything but dulcet feminine voice. The descriptions are excellent - now and then a tad too detailed - bringing to life the surroundings in which the story takes place. The streets are narrow and crooked, torches and tallow candles fill rooms and halls with acrid smoke, the solars of the rich are warm and welcoming while the back alleys of London are dark, damp and dangerous. I love how Kate's countenance is tinged a faint green by the light falling through the thick mullion glass, how dirty snow rimes London's streets. What really makes Satin Cinnabar stick out is the historical detail, inserted with such elegance that the reader never notices just how much facts the author is imparting. No long harangues, no paragraphs of "info" as to what is happening in the realm of England, how people dress, what they eat. Instead garments, foodstuffs and objects are casually mentioned in passing, with an adequate description sort of smuggled into the text. Ladies wear blanchets, and while I have no idea what a blanchet is I quickly realise it is borderline immodest to wear only a blanchet. Men have ladders up their hose (Of course they do! It just never struck me before that the fifteenth century male would know exactly what it feels to see your stocking - sorry, hose - marred by unraveling threads and not have any nail polish at hand with which to stop it from travelling onwards) pages serve their masters hypocras, and in hidden closets people add dangerous cinnabar to their alchemical experiments. This is a book that bombards the reader with sounds, smells and tastes. It paints views and pictures, it makes history spring alive, immersing the reader in the distant past.Ms Gaskell Denvil has written a wonderful novel, where a strong plot, vibrant characters and a well-described historical setting combine into a most pleasing whole. I can but congratulate all those readers who have this delightful experience before them and look forward to reading more of Ms Gaskell Denvil's excellent writing.
I was absolutely delighted with this novel by Barbara Gaskell Denvil. The story starts with the protagonist, Alex, regaining consciousness at the end of the Battle of Bosworth, where he and his family and household fought for their King Richard against "the Tudor bastard", and follow him through the first months of the reign of Henry Tudor. With him we experience the upheaval the regime change brought to the upper classes, but the novel's best feature is its description of the lives of ordinary people. The lives of the servants in the great houses and the working class Londoners are so often missing in historical fiction, but not here. Barbara's description is excellent and through it the reader can feel and smell what life would have been like. Her characterisation is equally strong and we emphasise with her characters.Thrown in is a murder mystery (yes, the reader gets the important clues) and a love story. Love stories in historical fiction can sometimes be a bit cloying, but this one is refreshingly different. It is a gripping and engrossing story, a real page turner, while maintaining a high level of historical accuracy. A thoroughly enjoyable read and I can't wait to read more by this writer.
This is a romance amateur detective historical novel, it provides a background fabric to the times. The time period is after the Battle of Bosworth in which Richard III was removed, and Henry VI came to the throne of England. The fabric is well painted and characterized, and keeps you reading. Most of the story is historically believable. I have read other books by Denvil and will read more, that in itself is a recommendation. She delivers a real sense of the time she is placing you in.
This is one book where the phrase couldn't put it down is appropriate. The characters are so well created that you feel like you know them. The storyline was enchanting and gory in places but very genuine to the period it was set in. I love this authors style of storytelling so descriptive without bogging down in detail and loosing the reader a hard combination to pull of but done seamlessly here.I loved the romance that was woven through Satin Cinnabar but the murder mystery makes this book so much more than a romance novel. The mystery is intriguing and keeps you guessing.Looking forward to her next novel.
although i wouldn't put it on my list of favorites, i did find myself thinking and wondering about the characters throughout the day, which is a good sign that it kept my interest. i read books mostly to fall asleep at night and this one was good for that.
Once I got into this book found it quiet good slow at start
I love this author. Complex plot and great writing. Not quite as good as "Fair Weather," I look forward to more from her.
