Full disclosure: This graphic novel popped into my radar only because the TV adaptation has Lana Condor. So, yeah, I came to it with the idea about a cool assassin school, which I assume is a lot like a cool spy school, only with more murder and dismemberment. And yeah, it does get there for a bit, but the story is mainly about Marcus, a first-generation Nicaraguan-American kid, who has had a hard life, being an orphan, bouncing around foster homes (some which may have been abusive), and finally a homeless kid with a rap sheet and an incentive to hide. When he is approached by the Kings Dominion School, he is pretty much out of choices, and his ambiguous morality means he is not entirely averse to killing, so he agrees to become a student, learn the deadly arts and some day hope to kill Ronald Reagan.Marcus, as an outsider in a school of legacy kids, finds his place among the outcasts, but he is also a novelty to the other kids who can’t decide if they fear him or want to bully him. To be honest, the school is mostly a background, and there are a few panels showing what life is like there, and introduces the cliques (which includes kids of cops, spies, mobsters, and even Neo-Nazis), but that is it. Most of the story in this first volume takes place outside it, what with his backstory, and then first test and the wild weekend (that ends in murder) that these kids have. It also occasionally goes into the backstories of the secondary characters. The artwork lends to that gritty dark atmosphere this book sets up, and the coloring scheme also recalls a noir-ish vibe. The character design seems okay, but lacks consistency for some, like Marcus (in some panels he looks larger and some like the 14 year old he is supposed to be).On the whole, I am interested in the story, both of Marcus and his friends, and what deadly adventures they will seek in the future.
