Such a well-written, unbiased, and informative look at midwifery. The author does a wonderful job at simply giving these midwives a voice...especially since many of them were pushed out of their careers (or "calling") by the state. May even read a second time!

This is one of the3 only two books on midwifery history that does not have pro-licensing bias (the other one is "Making Midwives Legal) by Raymond DeVries.The book tells the story how the traditional African-American midwives of Florida were unjustly slandered, and eventually eliminated, and how midwifery licensing was used as a tool of their elimination.

This is an unusual and interesting book - highly academic, so you have to find that congenial. Since I've been to most of the museums being discussed, I found it particularly interesting, but I doubt that it has general interest otherwise. The idea that museums play a role of situating a country internationally was something I'd never thought about before. I bought this after going to the main art museum in Doha, which is a real stunner.

I can see why this book is out of print, very elementary and missing some cultures. I feel it is of very little value if you are really interested in African dance. Photos are nice (just kidding) - there is one of “Bono, of Irish rock group U2, dances with an AIDS orphan in Uganda”... and a photo of Nelson Mandela dancing at a South African Freedom Day celebration but no mention of his cultural group, Xhosa, which has a traditional dance history. The title should have been “A sampling of African Dance” then I would have been less harsh in this review...

Loved the photos. Wish it was longer.

I felt the book was all over the place and missing some basic pieces needed to coach. There are some good ideas though. Too many mistakes that make some of the concepts difficult to understand. Was hoping for a book that pointed out the rules and types of positions a little more.
