Review
Bravo to Sandra Adell for having the courage to put a human face on the gambling industry's best customer the slot machine addict. From a safe distance, we watch as Adell falls prey to the deceptive and covert technology purposely engineered into modern-day slot machines. Sandra Adell is as unlikely a slot machine addict as anyone might imagine smart, sophisticated and accomplished. Yet her experience mirrors that of so many hundreds of thousands who continue to find their lives inexplicably spiraling out of control at the hands of a product marketed as entertainment, and often promoted by State governments as a revenue generator though her descriptions of her beloved Detroit would seem to refute the industry's promise as an effective economic engine. --Mary Tufts, Director, United to Stop Slots in MassachusettsConfessions of a Slot Machine Queen is a moving exploration of how a highly educated, Black woman descended into the depths of an addiction to slot machines and then climbed back out. With courage and clarity, Adell probes the connections between her difficult youth, her inspiring climb out of the Detroit ghetto of the 1960s to a tenured professorship and an acting career in mid-life, and then, following a deeply personal loss, her descent into gambling addiction. Adell s personal narrative makes the costs of the expansion of casino gambling in America real in ways that academic studies cannot often achieve. --Rachel Volberg, President, Gemini Research, Ltd.The perennial human dream of beating the odds, of outfoxing chance and Lady Fortune, has routinely stirred excitement and sometimes raw passion but much less often has it garnered close meditation and measured introspection. . . . Sandra Adell s memoir, Confessions of a Slot Machine Queen, supplies a new and welcome twist on the time-worn cliches of gambling confessionals, first because her double identity as African American and woman destabilize our conventional starting assumptions about such narratives, and second because the insights drawn from her professional vocation scholar and critic create loops of investigative and psychological introspection otherwise unexpected. . . . Significant portions of Confessions of a Slot Machine Queen confront a backdrop of urban decline and the ongoing destruction of her native black Detroit . . . where she sees the central corridor of the city s institutional life gradually engulfed by riots and blight and casino glare. --John S. Wright, Morse-Amoco Distinguished Teaching Professor of African American & African Studies and English, University of Minnesota

From the Inside Flap
The global economic crisis deepens by the day, yet the gambling industry continues to rake in enormous profits as people everywhere pump billions of dollars into slot machines in the hope of winning the ever elusive jackpot. Sandra AdellÂ’s CONFESSIONS OF A SLOT MACHINE QUEEN: A MEMOIR offers an intimate look into problem and compulsive casino gambling and the impact the casino industry is having on vulnerable communities, especially poor and working class people, the disabled, communities of color, and women?the fastest growing population of problem gamblers in the United States. AdellÂ’s narrative of gambling and loss unfolds against her history as an unwed and uneducated teen mother from Detroit who beat the odds stacked against her and went on to earn a Ph.D. and a coveted position as a literature professor in a major Midwestern university. In a clear and unaffected prose style, Adell describes how she went from having no interest in gambling to risking everything she had worked for after playing the slots and winning a small jackpot. We watch as she struggles against the lure of the slots only to get seduced time and again until she finally spirals out of control and is forced to confront the demons that lay beneath the surface of her professional persona. Confessions of a Slot Machine Queen is as much a story of redemption as it is a critical examination of the casino gambling industry and the potential dangers of this new and high-tech form of entertainment.

One of the very rare true story books about female gamblers out there. I’m researching the connection between gambling addiction and narcissism. This memoir gambling book allowed me to look for clues of things that hint of narcissism or symptoms of narcissism such as an addictive personality. Maybe because the author has more to lose in her professional career this book seemed conservative with information compared to another female gambler book I’ve read called A place where weeds and roses grow by Joan Spencer. In one of my amazon book review of a Gam Anon book called Living with a compulsive gambler I go into more details about this theory narcissism and gambling and the solution.Pros of the bookCan be purchased at a low used price. I run across a lot of pricey true gambling addiction books so it's nice to see low used prices. One of those rare female gambling memoir books.Cons of bookSeemed resistant to spill all the beans but there are a few highlights I've made throughout the book to things stated by the author that hints of narcissism. So this is yet another book written by a gambler with statements that support my theory. The highlights…….wines I love to drink. Pg 3 I’ve struggled with alcohol addiction for most of my life. I also once was a heavy smoker. I started smoking at age fourteen and for the next twenty years or so I smoked at least a pack of unfiltered Pall Mall cigarettes a day. Pg 22,23 A Lot of narcissist have or had alcohol and smoking addictions. A lot women deal with the alcohol dependency by playing the flirt game clubs and bars for drinks. Male alcoholics drink cheap beer and then solicit for money on the street.……..my second stream of income from acting and commercial print modeling jobs. pg 2...I fell in love with acting, I’ve immersed myself in that world. pg 8 Hollywood and theatre are attractive fields for narcissism because it feeds their need for attention without having relationships, Plus the money potential to make millions of dollars is attractive as well. Hence why you see so many narcissistic hollywood actors and actresses with addictions and gambling vices.….Not to mention that I’m une femme d une certaine age, that is middle aged and a black woman…..After more than twenty years at the University of Wisconsin Madison first as a graduate student in the Department of Comparative Literature and then as a professor in Afro American Studies I was tired of trying to live up to other peoples images of a black woman in academe. Pgs 2,3….Narcissist are master manipulators and like to use bad experiences or matrix misinformation to justify future wrong actions or seek sympathy. Example...Popular matrix myth is that It’s a man’s world. Yet a woman knows that if she is half decent looking she can be homeless and have many government programs help her until she finds a descent Joe Boring dependable man to support her until she gets greedy and divorces him for a flashy man with money and a addictive personality...aka a male narcissist. On the other hand a young male has far fewer if any government programs to support him and even fewer women who would support a down and out male till he gets on his feet. But men make more money is another myth. A woman may or may not make less money than a man but what is certain is that every man I know spends a considerable amount of his income on buying a woman fancy things that she wants so in essence a woman has control over her own money and a good portion of a mans or mens money too. Whenever I think of history, I think of building 7 that took place on nine eleven. That was something that has happened in our lifetimes but yet building 7 is missing from nine eleven history books. Another interesting thing I found listed in Webster 1828 dictionary which is 30 yrs before the civil war. Slave-trade definition... the barbarous and wicked business of purchasing men and women transporting them to a distant country and selling them for slaves. Niggard definition... A miser; a person meanly close and covetous. A sordid wretch who saves every cent or spends grudgingly. No mention about skin color as misinformed by hollywood propaganda machine.I was liberating myself intellectually, artistically, and spiritually, not from the poet but from the weight I had borne for many years as a black woman professor at a predominantly white university...I had earned a PH.D, received tenure, published books and articles on African American literature.pgs 8,9….I get a sense of a lot of pride. Narcissist have a lot of pride, to admit wrong, ask for help or apologize to others tend to hurt narcissist ego. Bible says pride comes before the fall. Proverbs 16:18 Then there is that myth of struggling in a mans world as a woman. I don’t think any woman can say she never got help from a man in some way or another. Sure she may have been doing a natural thing such as having sex with a man but still a man helped her to achieve whatever goal she wanted at the time. Then to bring up skin color as a disadvantage when becoming successful in a predominantly white university gives no credit at all the white people who helped her at the university. Skin color wasn't a problem back in the bible days because people were judged by their mentality and attitude. Moses was married to a ethiopian woman. Num 12:1 God sees a man's heart and not his appearance. 1 Sam 16:7 Romans 2:11After watching several people sit at the slot machine to my right, spin a few times and then leave I decided to give it a try.pg 11 Some slot players like to vulture and watch people lose a lot of money playing and then expecting the machine to soon hit go play the machine as soon as they leave their seat to leave or go to the restroom. The man next to me complained that he had lost 1800 dollars on the ten times pay machines . He was angry; I was disgusted with him and me. I felt like yelling at him, Will you shut the f up.pg 20. Narcissist only see and think of themselves so they view everyone else as competition or obstacles to their goals or people to manipulate for their agenda. Gamblers to see and treat other gamblers as competition. There are alot more book highlights that I made but the review is getting long so I will stop but If you would like more info on narcissism and the gambling connection then please look for my amazon Gam Anon book review of Living with a compulsive gambler.
This is an amazing story. A must read.
Great Book thank you
I got this for my mother and she LOVED it.
Not a whole lot here that deals with gambling addiction. This book is more a biography of this woman. Not a bad read but also not what I was looking for.
Shows how educated, smart and successful people can succumb to this addiction, the insanity, this irrational urge. She didn't have to lose it all to know her time was up. It's about having the right attitude when your solution doesn't quite come at you the way you expected.
I read this book in two days; I could not put it down. I know Professor Adell personally, and she carries herself in such a poised, demure manner that I never would have imagined her background was so tumultuous. I would definitely recommend this book for any person struggling through a gambling addiction, and this book should be first on the list for any single parent contemplating returning to school.
I agree that the writing in this book is very good, just really fine expository writing and in any case the reader feels privileged to see her personal, professional, and family life. Nonetheless, I think it fails in that it just never quite helps readers understand why problem gamblers gamble. It's quite clear from the text that the author understands the math of repetitive gambling (and therefore knows that unless you stop the house odds will surely grind you down) and has no magical illusions about the power of mind over slot machine. Further, she strongly dislikes the casino environment and does not seem to enjoy gambling. Yet, she can't seem to stop, despite a growing awareness, even horror, at what it is costing her in money and personal respect.Casino gambling is hugely popular, yet I've never had a clue as to what makes it attractive. Mostly those doing it don't appear to be having fun and, even without problem gambling, it's still a costly activity. So, I read this book primarily because I wanted some understand of why people do this, despite its high cost and, for some, significant risks. In the end I was disappointed with this book because it just didn't help me understand. I do realize that some people engage in a variety of compulsive behaviors, and often they're unable to explain why it so hard to stop them. So, perhaps this is beyond explanation, just something no one who hasn't experienced it can understand. But if so, books about it will be of limited interest. In any case, the reader can't help but walk away without the realization, "This could happen to anyone (but it's more likely to happen if there's a casino nearby)" and, "The downside of 'just trying it' may be far larger than you think."
