A hope-filled resource for parents who have welcomed children: -- From other countries and cultures -- From troubled backgrounds -- With special behavioral or emotional needs "A tremendous resource for parents and professionals alike." --Thomas Atwood, president and CEO, National Council for Adoption "A must-read not only for adoptive parents but for all families striving to correct and connect with their children." --Carol S. Kranowitz, M.A., author of The Out-of-Sync Child "The Connected Child is the literary equivalent of an airline oxygen mask and instructions: place the mask over your own face first, then over the nose of your child. This book first assists the parent, saying, in effect, 'Calm down, you're not the first mom or dad in the world to face this hurdle, breathe deeply, then follow these simple steps.' The sense of not facing these issues alone -- the relief that your child's behavior is not off the charts -- is hugely comforting. Other children have behaved this way; other parents have responded thusly; welcome to the community of therapeutic and joyful adoptive families." This is the textbook for foster (and fost-to-adopt) parents. If you do not have it yet, stop reading reviews now and buy it on your tablet or Kindle or audible so you can read it immediately. If you have friends or family new to fostering, buy them this book now. This book should be given to every foster parent upon completion of training or during training. It's a shame they mention the book, the author, and the research during training but not simply hand out the book as your reference Bible for the tough times sure to come.I wish we had this book when we had our first placement. He had been through hell and his behaviors were beyond our comprehension. Within the first few pages of the book is a table that connects behaviors to feelings that should be passed out to every foster parent before a child moves in.

This was a very helpful book! We are in the process of adoption, and it was recommended to us to read this book. We have listened to Dr. Purvis in the past and learned so much for her approach. This book will be kept within handy reach. She has so many wonderful ideas for how to interact with a child coming from a traumatic background. It is helpful for any child, not just a foster or adopted child!

Was this book really only $6.74?! I have a decent foundation in child development and managing "normal" behavior, but I read this book in preparation for becoming a foster parent to kids who have experienced trauma. This is an absolutely fabulous book on basic parenting, with very specific instructions for how to work with troubled children. I love it and I know I am going to be structuring our home life around what I've learned from this book.

This book was recommended to me by my adoption caseworker and by other adoptive moms in a public forum. I strongly recommend it! We are about to adopt siblings and, even though they don't have any current behavior concerns like hoarding or RAD, this book has still been helpful in parenting any children who have experienced trauma. The book has lots of examples and lots of specific ways to help connect and support your children. I'm about halfway through the book now (I read half and then re-read half with a pencil, making notes and underling parts I wanted to remember) and the chapters on "Felt Safety" and "Teaching Life Values" have been the most helpful so far - well, that our struggles are not ours alone - others have had them and many have surpassed them. Karyn Purvis is an expert in the field - and after reading this book, I understand why her name is so well known. Her work is realistic, down to earth, and filled with hope. If you are adopting or work with foster or adopted children, this is a great read. The book's main points are: - The key is to treat the whole child - and we'll help you do that! - Start where your child is - Compassion is key - Focus on nurturing and structure / connecting and correcting - "At-risk youngsters are capable of making tremendous strides toward overcoming early hardships and limitations."

This book is about attachment parenting or caregiving to children who have come through difficult situations. It gives ideas on how to approach a difficult child with love and understanding. I will keep this book as a companion to my baby book on attachment parenting called Christian Parenting and Childcare by Dr. William Sears. This particular book does NOT use scripture but it is scriptural in its teaching. Good for foster children, adoptive children from other cultures and children who have been in violent or emotionally abusive homes.

I don't often rave about parenting books because everybody has their own style of parenting and every kid is different. There is a reason there are thousands of parenting books on the market. However, this one stands alone! I only got this because it was required reading for our adoption agency, but I am SO glad it was.Though there are times when I wished the author had gone into greater detail (especially on the nutrition chapter), this book does a great job of providing parents with MANY tools that I feel every parent can benefit from. It is geared toward adopted/abused children, but I really felt like it pertained a lot about my biological children as well. This book can give you a sense of control especially with stubborn, strong-willed children. I speak from experience. I don't know which is more helpful, the tools offered by this book or the sense of having options. I don't think you can go wrong with this book!

Dr. Purvis spent much of her life studying and working with adopted children from many walks of life. In her book "The Connected Child" she makes gross generalizations for ALL adopted children stating that they are ALL "at risk" and therefore all will act out. As I have read this book, I can see the behaviors she describes in many children, biological or adopted. In fact, as I reflect on my childhood, I see many of the behaviors in myself. The parenting techniques that Dr. Purvis offers are great and often work very well. The techniques don't include screaming and yelling, solitary punishment, or physical punishment. The techniques are focused on redirection and correction of the behaviors. It gives you techniques on how to train a child to control their behaviors and express how they are feeling. It gives insights on how to help your child make decisions by giving them choices. It gives you tools to use to help kids to stop and think about what they have just done wrong, and how to do it right. If you can read past the generalizations of "at risk" adopted children, the parenting techniques and tools provided in this book are great and I think any parent, of biological children or adopted, can benefit from the lessons.

I have loved this book since a small child. Ruth Sawyer's wry witty writing combined with Robert McCloskey's beautiful illustrations didn't know what a profound effect this wonderful, expressive book would have on my life as an artist. My original book was so worn out from overuse, my parents threw it out much to my dismay. But now that I have this book back again, and in such wonderful condition (thank you to The Stone Soup Foundation, Inc. for selling me this book!). When I opened the package, I cried, that's how much this little book meant to me.

I read this to my kids when they were young, and now I found it again for my grandson. The repetition is great for the preschooler’s ear and the story is a peek into Appalachian Hill people’s culture.

I loved this book as a child (1980s). I was really happy to find it for my son, who is 2. He points to the illustrations and says, "That's Merry! That's Grumble! That's Johnny! OOH, A PIG!!!"

Book came in great condition

Was a gift and was appreciated.

Enjoyed this book as a child. Glad I was able to purchase it so my children can enjoy it as well.

love it

Great Book in great condition.

Do we really need another book on Mickey Mantle? To me the answer is yes, although this is more than a book on Mantle; it is a story of baseball during the 1950s with an emphasis on the year 1956. This book, thankfully, is not a repeat of game-by-game coverage of Mantle's 1956 season. Authors Roberts and Smith also treat the reader to such subjects as what it may have been like to work in the mine's of Oklahoma, the subsequent brief rise, fall, and rise again of Mantle, the role of Joe DiMaggio during his last year of 1951, Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs, Mantle's discovery of what life in the big city was compared to his home town of Commerce, Oklahoma, the relationship that existed between owners and players prior to free agency, and the temptations faced by players on the road away from their families. Also included is Mantle's quest in search of the triple crown and the competition he faced from Ted Williams involving batting average and from Al Kaline in regard to runs-batted-in, and finally the 1956 World Series between the Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers.Several interesting anecdotes are included I haven't found in other books. I have to admit I wondered what could be different from this book on Mantle from other very worthy biographies. I did find two errors in the book. Page 103 mentions Lou Boudreau as manager of the Kansas City Royals. It should read Athletics. Also, on page 186 the name Al Katalinas is mentioned as the one who signed Al Kaline to the Tigers. The name should read Ed and not Al.This is not a biography of Mickey Mantle nor is it strictly limited to 1956. It includes what baseball was like during the time period of the 1950 which I find interesting since this is the first decade that I started to follow baseball. The book includes photos spaced throughout the book.

I'm a little biased because I'm a Yankee fan and Mickey Mantle is my favorite baseball player of all time. However, I really liked this book because it provided the social context behind what was happening at the time. It also provides the shenanigans and partying of Mickey with Billy Martin and Whitey Ford, but if you have read any book on Mickey Mantle, you'll be aware of this (including "The Last Boy" by Jane Leavy which I highly recommend). But, the social context of the time was interesting and I was not completely aware of. We often look back at the mid-1950s as this boring time or a time of tranquility but it was neither. People did live on edge due to the threat of nuclear war, the economy, and race relations, etc. Baseball was a needed diversion, and Mickey Mantle in 1956 provided the excitement that was needed in that year to drive the sport. When he came to town in another city, the fans came out to see him play and to see their team beat the vaunted Yankees. It was all good fun, and resulted in stress relief that was needed back then. This book also does an excellent job of laying out the year, week by week and day by day, and the competition between Mickey and Ted Williams for batting average champ and Mickey and Al Kaline for RBI champ. But, ultimately won all three and the triple crown: home runs, RBIs and batting champion. Something that is very rare in baseball. I certainly highly recommend this book for Yankee fans, but also for all baseball fans. It it good to go back to baseball history if you love the sport, and this is an excellent baseball history book.

Any book I can read about Mickey Mantle is good for me as it brings back great memories of baseball in the 1950s. The author deftly describes not only the heroics of Mantle on the field, but his private life which is alarming at best. The book is a ride through events that get Mantle to the triple crown and is well done. If you like old-time baseball stories about legends of yesteryear this book is for you. I did not realize Mantle was hurt so much and the author does a good job of detailing this aspect of Mantle's rise to stardom. There is more meaning to the title, A Season in the Sun, than meets the eye.Dr. Norman Jones, author of Growing Up in Indiana:The Culture & Hoosier Hysteria Revisited

I’m 75 pages in and I’m ready to put it down. The fact that the authors think Yankee stadium helped Joe DiMaggio as a hitter and that Ted Williams used the whole field as a hitter makes me question everything thing else they’ve written. These are things that even passive baseball fans would know. After all, the Ted Williams shift was employed because he stubbornly refused to hit to the opposite field and I thought it common knowledge that DiMaggio lost untold home runs due to Death Vally.I’d advice the authors to go to Baseball reference and look at Joe D’s home/road splits before making the ridiculous statement that Yankees stadium helped him.

I have just about all the Mantle biographies and this one did not disappoint. I must admit that I purchase them so I can relive the tales of Mantle's antics and laugh another time; Roberts' book provided fewer laughs although he did cover a lot of new ground as regards the detail of the 1956 season. Mantle enthusiasts should include this one on their shelves alongside Jane Leavy's book from a few years back, "The Last Boy."

Wow! Randy Roberts has told the Mickey Mantle story from an angle that nobody else has. This is a 180 degree departure from the usual Mantle stuff. You really get to know The Mick in this book more than anything else written. A Season In The Sun: The Rise Of Mickey Mantle is a must read for any Mickey Mantle fan, New York Yankees fan, baseball fan, New York City fan and history buff. This book tells you so much more than just the Mickey Mantle story you will hate to see the book come to an end.

This is one of the best books on Mickey. His transformation from the Oklahoma kid to the "Blue Eyed Boy" which happened during the legendary 1956 season is a treat to the readers.Although I am biased because I know the author personally.

I love Mickey Mantle , I grew up in N Y in the 60’s and he was N y baseball . This is the story of the 1956 baseball season of Mickey . I have read enough of what he became and I don’t want to know any more about that Mickey. I loved this book.

This is a revealing analysis of porn by someone who has been involved in the adult industry for years as a film maker. The author challenges some of the myths about porn such the perception that women are regularly forced to perform in porn movies by their agents or managers. He wonders why directors should recruit the unwilling when there are so many women who are eager to go into porn.He states that before the video revolution, the most beautiful photo models shunned hardcore pictures. They only stripped for Playboy or Penthouse, publications respectable enough to use as stepping stones to promote their stage, screen and modeling careers. But by the late 1980s this changed. He attributes this change to the money that could be made by adult performers in video. In the film era, stars were lucky to land a dozen porn roles annually. However, the huge volume of video shoots gaves actresses a chance to work steadily, and the speed of bringing videos from set to market make new women stars within months. It is well researched and illustrated with photographs.

The author covers change in porn from cheap 16mm loops to CD's. Unfortunately the book was written before the internet changed everything again in a radical way. His reporting of the Traci Lords débâcle was very interesting and sheds a new light on her and her calculating ways instead of the popular consensus of her being exploited. The same is reported about Linda Lovelace whose religious conversion prompted her to make many false accusations and claims, though I can understand her reasons for doing it.The best part of the book was in the last third when he details the hypocritical and in my mind unconstitutional methods the government pursued in their attempt to eliminate porn. I always thought Edward Meese was a moron, this book adds to my conviction. Some types of porn deserve to be illegal and laws outlawing them are justified, but the majority of porn and the decision to watch it should be left to the individual. Whenever the government starts to dictate what its citizens can and cannot read, the road to fascism becomes shorter.

I love reading the history of Hollywood, no matter the genre. Mr Jennings gives a...."penetrating" look at the early days of porn. Being an actual participant in the development of the industry gives the real look that I crave when I read the histories. A wry sense of humour prevades this novel and the self depravation that Mr Jennings reserves for himself is refreshing. I looked at other titles but decided on this one and i was not disappointed, I read it straight through in one day (I read fast, I usually read a book a day, being retired gives you the time to do that). Recommend this book to anyone curious about the early days of porn and Mr Jennings dispells some myths that persist about the industry and people who work in it. Thanx Amazon!

I really liked this book. It featured an insight into the world of adult film making that is seldom ever seen nor realized. The author was not your typical knuckle dragging pultroon that may associate with the adult film industry, but a highly educated and experienced conventional film maker who earned his stripes in the world of commercial advertising. His insight into the personages and events came from first hand accounts and actions. His research about the overall facts and figures was eye opening. I would recommend this book to anyone with an actual interest of an oft times maligned part of the cinimagraphic arts.

This book would make an excellent reference if one were writing a paper on the transition pornography (and law enforcement's approach to dealing with it) made from quick 8mm loops and bachelor party smut into home video production with sophisticated filming techniques. In the mid to late 1970s, porn did what it does best. It led the way for Hollywood. This is not a lightly-made claim and most students of film are quite aware that while Hollywood may purchase the bus, porn has always been the driver. Just to cite one example among many, despite the fact that betamax was a higher quality product with better picture quality and sound, pornographers found it quicker and easier to duplicate VHS so it became the winner of the first video wars. Additionally, by adhering to the law of supply & demand, porn set the early price points for home video rental product. While such decisions made hundred of millions of dollars for the porn industry, Hollywood started measuring profits in tens of billions. However, the events covered in "Skinflicks" largely took place 30-35 years ago. It was a time of mob involvement, seedy red-light districts zoned by the cities and packed with strip clubs, adult toy stores, peep shows, and aged theaters running a constant stream of whatever could press the borders of obscenity laws without quite crossing the line. Women were exploited, used up, drugged up, and then tossed aside as looks faded and fickle audiences demanded an endless parade of the young and beautiful. If you are picking this title up to learn what the industry is like today, you're wasting your money. There are numerous other books that are more up to date and relevant that can provide what you seek. Ron Jeremy has written an excellent autobiography, just to site one example. On the other hand, if you are looking for information about the control organized crime once had over the business and how it got that way in the first place, you will find "Skinflicks" to be very informative, if not very engrossing.Apart from the age of the book itself, the biggest problem is that the author doesn't seem to ever decide whether he wanted to write an investigative expose' ala "All The President's Men" or "60 Minutes" or write tale of titillation and exploitation. As a result, the reader gets neither. Large sections of the book cover trials and legal cases - both famous and all but unknown - and the impact they had on the industry itself. Then others focus on the changes made by the film makers in reaction to or anticipation of the ever shifting laws. Much of it would be utterly absurd if it weren't true. Editor's would peruse film frame by frame trying to decide when something crossed the line. Without getting too specific in a public forum I'm literally talking about things like "how many knuckles constitute this term" and how many toes will cross the line of decency and dip into the pool of "obscene."For most folks such things are of mild interest at best. Still, if you purchase this and read it thinking of it as something of a snapshot of the early days or a time capsule of the birth of what is now an industry where women not only get paid well, but sometimes start their own media mini-empires, it's well worth the cost. Just know what you're buying before you begin. Hopefully I've managed to help you in that process.

Review

Bravo to Sandra Adell for having the courage to put a human face on the gambling industry's best customer the slot machine addict. From a safe distance, we watch as Adell falls prey to the deceptive and covert technology purposely engineered into modern-day slot machines. Sandra Adell is as unlikely a slot machine addict as anyone might imagine smart, sophisticated and accomplished. Yet her experience mirrors that of so many hundreds of thousands who continue to find their lives inexplicably spiraling out of control at the hands of a product marketed as entertainment, and often promoted by State governments as a revenue generator though her descriptions of her beloved Detroit would seem to refute the industry's promise as an effective economic engine. --Mary Tufts, Director, United to Stop Slots in MassachusettsConfessions of a Slot Machine Queen is a moving exploration of how a highly educated, Black woman descended into the depths of an addiction to slot machines and then climbed back out. With courage and clarity, Adell probes the connections between her difficult youth, her inspiring climb out of the Detroit ghetto of the 1960s to a tenured professorship and an acting career in mid-life, and then, following a deeply personal loss, her descent into gambling addiction. Adell s personal narrative makes the costs of the expansion of casino gambling in America real in ways that academic studies cannot often achieve. --Rachel Volberg, President, Gemini Research, Ltd.The perennial human dream of beating the odds, of outfoxing chance and Lady Fortune, has routinely stirred excitement and sometimes raw passion but much less often has it garnered close meditation and measured introspection. . . . Sandra Adell s memoir, Confessions of a Slot Machine Queen, supplies a new and welcome twist on the time-worn cliches of gambling confessionals, first because her double identity as African American and woman destabilize our conventional starting assumptions about such narratives, and second because the insights drawn from her professional vocation scholar and critic create loops of investigative and psychological introspection otherwise unexpected. . . . Significant portions of Confessions of a Slot Machine Queen confront a backdrop of urban decline and the ongoing destruction of her native black Detroit . . . where she sees the central corridor of the city s institutional life gradually engulfed by riots and blight and casino glare. --John S. Wright, Morse-Amoco Distinguished Teaching Professor of African American & African Studies and English, University of Minnesota

From the Inside Flap

The global economic crisis deepens by the day, yet the gambling industry continues to rake in enormous profits as people everywhere pump billions of dollars into slot machines in the hope of winning the ever elusive jackpot. Sandra AdellÂ’s CONFESSIONS OF A SLOT MACHINE QUEEN: A MEMOIR offers an intimate look into problem and compulsive casino gambling and the impact the casino industry is having on vulnerable communities, especially poor and working class people, the disabled, communities of color, and women?the fastest growing population of problem gamblers in the United States. AdellÂ’s narrative of gambling and loss unfolds against her history as an unwed and uneducated teen mother from Detroit who beat the odds stacked against her and went on to earn a Ph.D. and a coveted position as a literature professor in a major Midwestern university. In a clear and unaffected prose style, Adell describes how she went from having no interest in gambling to risking everything she had worked for after playing the slots and winning a small jackpot. We watch as she struggles against the lure of the slots only to get seduced time and again until she finally spirals out of control and is forced to confront the demons that lay beneath the surface of her professional persona. Confessions of a Slot Machine Queen is as much a story of redemption as it is a critical examination of the casino gambling industry and the potential dangers of this new and high-tech form of entertainment.

One of the very rare true story books about female gamblers out there. I’m researching the connection between gambling addiction and narcissism. This memoir gambling book allowed me to look for clues of things that hint of narcissism or symptoms of narcissism such as an addictive personality. Maybe because the author has more to lose in her professional career this book seemed conservative with information compared to another female gambler book I’ve read called A place where weeds and roses grow by Joan Spencer. In one of my amazon book review of a Gam Anon book called Living with a compulsive gambler I go into more details about this theory narcissism and gambling and the solution.Pros of the bookCan be purchased at a low used price. I run across a lot of pricey true gambling addiction books so it's nice to see low used prices. One of those rare female gambling memoir books.Cons of bookSeemed resistant to spill all the beans but there are a few highlights I've made throughout the book to things stated by the author that hints of narcissism. So this is yet another book written by a gambler with statements that support my theory. The highlights…….wines I love to drink. Pg 3 I’ve struggled with alcohol addiction for most of my life. I also once was a heavy smoker. I started smoking at age fourteen and for the next twenty years or so I smoked at least a pack of unfiltered Pall Mall cigarettes a day. Pg 22,23 A Lot of narcissist have or had alcohol and smoking addictions. A lot women deal with the alcohol dependency by playing the flirt game clubs and bars for drinks. Male alcoholics drink cheap beer and then solicit for money on the street.……..my second stream of income from acting and commercial print modeling jobs. pg 2...I fell in love with acting, I’ve immersed myself in that world. pg 8 Hollywood and theatre are attractive fields for narcissism because it feeds their need for attention without having relationships, Plus the money potential to make millions of dollars is attractive as well. Hence why you see so many narcissistic hollywood actors and actresses with addictions and gambling vices.….Not to mention that I’m une femme d une certaine age, that is middle aged and a black woman…..After more than twenty years at the University of Wisconsin Madison first as a graduate student in the Department of Comparative Literature and then as a professor in Afro American Studies I was tired of trying to live up to other peoples images of a black woman in academe. Pgs 2,3….Narcissist are master manipulators and like to use bad experiences or matrix misinformation to justify future wrong actions or seek sympathy. Example...Popular matrix myth is that It’s a man’s world. Yet a woman knows that if she is half decent looking she can be homeless and have many government programs help her until she finds a descent Joe Boring dependable man to support her until she gets greedy and divorces him for a flashy man with money and a addictive personality...aka a male narcissist. On the other hand a young male has far fewer if any government programs to support him and even fewer women who would support a down and out male till he gets on his feet. But men make more money is another myth. A woman may or may not make less money than a man but what is certain is that every man I know spends a considerable amount of his income on buying a woman fancy things that she wants so in essence a woman has control over her own money and a good portion of a mans or mens money too. Whenever I think of history, I think of building 7 that took place on nine eleven. That was something that has happened in our lifetimes but yet building 7 is missing from nine eleven history books. Another interesting thing I found listed in Webster 1828 dictionary which is 30 yrs before the civil war. Slave-trade definition... the barbarous and wicked business of purchasing men and women transporting them to a distant country and selling them for slaves. Niggard definition... A miser; a person meanly close and covetous. A sordid wretch who saves every cent or spends grudgingly. No mention about skin color as misinformed by hollywood propaganda machine.I was liberating myself intellectually, artistically, and spiritually, not from the poet but from the weight I had borne for many years as a black woman professor at a predominantly white university...I had earned a PH.D, received tenure, published books and articles on African American literature.pgs 8,9….I get a sense of a lot of pride. Narcissist have a lot of pride, to admit wrong, ask for help or apologize to others tend to hurt narcissist ego. Bible says pride comes before the fall. Proverbs 16:18 Then there is that myth of struggling in a mans world as a woman. I don’t think any woman can say she never got help from a man in some way or another. Sure she may have been doing a natural thing such as having sex with a man but still a man helped her to achieve whatever goal she wanted at the time. Then to bring up skin color as a disadvantage when becoming successful in a predominantly white university gives no credit at all the white people who helped her at the university. Skin color wasn't a problem back in the bible days because people were judged by their mentality and attitude. Moses was married to a ethiopian woman. Num 12:1 God sees a man's heart and not his appearance. 1 Sam 16:7 Romans 2:11After watching several people sit at the slot machine to my right, spin a few times and then leave I decided to give it a try.pg 11 Some slot players like to vulture and watch people lose a lot of money playing and then expecting the machine to soon hit go play the machine as soon as they leave their seat to leave or go to the restroom. The man next to me complained that he had lost 1800 dollars on the ten times pay machines . He was angry; I was disgusted with him and me. I felt like yelling at him, Will you shut the f up.pg 20. Narcissist only see and think of themselves so they view everyone else as competition or obstacles to their goals or people to manipulate for their agenda. Gamblers to see and treat other gamblers as competition. There are alot more book highlights that I made but the review is getting long so I will stop but If you would like more info on narcissism and the gambling connection then please look for my amazon Gam Anon book review of Living with a compulsive gambler.

This is an amazing story. A must read.

Great Book thank you

I got this for my mother and she LOVED it.

Not a whole lot here that deals with gambling addiction. This book is more a biography of this woman. Not a bad read but also not what I was looking for.

Shows how educated, smart and successful people can succumb to this addiction, the insanity, this irrational urge. She didn't have to lose it all to know her time was up. It's about having the right attitude when your solution doesn't quite come at you the way you expected.

I read this book in two days; I could not put it down. I know Professor Adell personally, and she carries herself in such a poised, demure manner that I never would have imagined her background was so tumultuous. I would definitely recommend this book for any person struggling through a gambling addiction, and this book should be first on the list for any single parent contemplating returning to school.

I agree that the writing in this book is very good, just really fine expository writing and in any case the reader feels privileged to see her personal, professional, and family life. Nonetheless, I think it fails in that it just never quite helps readers understand why problem gamblers gamble. It's quite clear from the text that the author understands the math of repetitive gambling (and therefore knows that unless you stop the house odds will surely grind you down) and has no magical illusions about the power of mind over slot machine. Further, she strongly dislikes the casino environment and does not seem to enjoy gambling. Yet, she can't seem to stop, despite a growing awareness, even horror, at what it is costing her in money and personal respect.Casino gambling is hugely popular, yet I've never had a clue as to what makes it attractive. Mostly those doing it don't appear to be having fun and, even without problem gambling, it's still a costly activity. So, I read this book primarily because I wanted some understand of why people do this, despite its high cost and, for some, significant risks. In the end I was disappointed with this book because it just didn't help me understand. I do realize that some people engage in a variety of compulsive behaviors, and often they're unable to explain why it so hard to stop them. So, perhaps this is beyond explanation, just something no one who hasn't experienced it can understand. But if so, books about it will be of limited interest. In any case, the reader can't help but walk away without the realization, "This could happen to anyone (but it's more likely to happen if there's a casino nearby)" and, "The downside of 'just trying it' may be far larger than you think."
