A compact volume that never fails to impress about the huge impact the Civil War had on Washington, DC. Janke has written an excellent guide to the many Civil War-related sites around the nation's capital. As one who reads often about the war, oft-tread ground for historians, I'm always amazed that new things can still be discovered, and yet that's exactly what Janke has done. Her chapter on casualties, cemeteries and hospitals is eye-opening. She goes into detail about how many hospitals were built in the city, documenting their location and size. The city was a huge medical ward during the war. Equally impressive are the extensive images from the Kiplinger Washington Collection, many of them in color, that show the transformation of a small national capital into an armed metropolis during just four years.
If you are a history buff like me then this is a great book to read before visiting DC again. Read the book and familiarize yourself on places and then take a look at them as they are now. Most know the Surratt house and how it is a Chinese restaurant today but some of the other changes will shock you and disappoint.Janke does a great job in telling us about the places, what happened.

The Civil War transformed American life and the nation's capital. As a near 40-year resident of Washington, I have combined my interest in the Civil War with an interest in local history. This short book published by the History Press, "A Guide to Civil War Washington, D.C.: the Capital of the Union" (2013)shows how Civil War history and the history of the capital city intertwine. The author, Lucinda Proust Janke, is a historian and longtime Washington, D.C. resident. The many photographs in the book are drawn from the archives of the Historical Society of Washington, D.C and the Kiplinger Washington Collection.The book consists predominantly of text but with many photographs. The photos include a 16-page insert of clear, color plates showing many aspects of Washington, D.C. during the Civil War years. These plates add a great deal to the book.The book moves between Civil War history and Washington D.C. history and thus covers a great deal in its short space. In addition to the broad subject matter, Janke takes time to develop the story of an individual Union soldier, private John Dixon, from upstate New York. The story of Dixon's Civil War service is discussed at several points in the book, and it tends to distract from an already large and not entirely fully-covered story.The book begins with a brief discussion of the capital city in the years before the Civil War. It proceeds to discuss the impact of Lincoln's inauguration and the outbreak of the war on Washington and its residents. Janke shows how the city lived in fear of imminent invasion. She also shows the beginning of plans for the construction of hospitals and barracks for the soldiers in a small city unprepared for a large war. A subsequent chapter develops the story during the war years of 1862 -- 1864.Janke breaks the chronological sequence in a chapter that describes the many hospitals that dotted the Washington, D.C. area to cope with the widespread casualties and illnesses of battle. She offers many rare photographs. Unlike Civil War buildings and landmarks, most of the hospitals did not survive the war. The discussion of the sites is thus particularly useful. Janke discusses as well the efforts of individuals such as Clara Barton in relieving the suffering caused by the war, and she introduced me to the efforts of Dr. Alexander Augusta, a pioneering African American physician who became a rare commissioned officer and after the war served as the first African American faculty member of the Howard University Medical School.Janke discusses the changing demographics of Washington, D.C. with the influx of African Americans from the South. She shows the camps in the city that were created to meet the needs of the refuges. Again, most of these places did not long survive the war.The final chapter in the book focuses on the assassination of President Lincoln in 1865.The book gives only passing mention to the extensive monumentation that took place in Washington, D.C. in the war's aftermath. But Janke discusses some new Civil War commemorations, including a 2005 statue, "Casualties Arriving at the Mount Pleasant Hospital" and the 1998 statue, "The Spirit of Freedom" at the site of the African American Civil War Memorial at the U Street Metro station.This book offers a basic guide to Civil War Washington, D.C. While good, the book is unfocused and leaves much unsaid about the capital city in wartime. The book will be of value to readers with an interest in the Civil War and to visitors to and residents of Washington, D.C. who wish an introduction to the many remembrances the city offers of the Civil War.Robin Friedman
