Michael Witwer is a lifelong gamer and gaming enthusiast. He holds degrees from Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, where this book first emerged as the subject of his master's thesis. He is also a film and theater actor and marketing professional, and is the brother of actor Sam Witwer, who originally introduced him to Dungeons & Dragons. He lives in Chicago, Illinois, with his wife and two children.

Empire of the Imagination is a decent, but short, Biography of Gary's Gygax's life. It has a few shortcomings, but ultimately is a satisfactory work.Just some quick background on myself before I get into the review--I was a friend of Gary in his later years. You can find my name or initials on much of the work in the latter half of the bibliography, mostly in the days when he was doing stuff with publishers Clark and Cheunault (and Mongoose). I'm still friendly with Gail. I wanted to make sure I'm upfront about this before doing a review, because obviously I have my own biases, but I also want to make sure I'm not dismissed as a "random guy on the Internet" either.The book itself is presented in a series of vignettes--a notable point in Gary's life with some dialog and then reflections on how he got to that point. The book does a decent job of giving an overview of how things were going in Gary's life at each point. It's clear the author has taken a lot of time and tried to compile a lot of different sources into a narrative. The stories are told in an entertaining style, and I enjoyed some of the new insights into Gary's earlier life, like reading about the "Big Fish Story", or why Gary stopped driving.Based on reading this book, it's fairly accurate, and doesn't conflict with a lot of both what I've read and the private stories Gary told me, so I think he does a decent job of getting his history right. And a lot of these stories are backed up by the public record as well. I trust that Witwer did a very good job on this.The main thing I like is that Witwer does a great job of producing footnotes for the book and bibliographies. There's footnotes for each chapter. He draws upon a lot of public statements made by Gary, including his long running threads at ENWorld. The Appendixes also give a rather comprehensive bibliography of Gary's gaming work, and there's another with a dated timeline of important events of Gary's life. The very last chapters Witwer spends discussing Gary's influence on modern fiction and how gaming had changed the world, influenced popular culture, etc. I was very prepared to be disappointed since some biographies don't go into this amount of detail.There are, however, some flaws. In some cases, using the narrative device leads to some creative interpretations of the facts. There are some things I don't think he would have ever said. (I cringed when I read "What Would Conan Do?", as well as the "grim reaper" figure asking Gary to play chess on his deathbed). My personal preference would have been less "creative interpretation" and more analysis, especially where the creative process occurred. Also, he frames sections with Gary as a player in a Dungeon, and calls these section "Levels", something that I think just makes the biography less serious and a bit too "cute" for my tastes. But that's a minor criticism based on personal taste.The book unfortunately is short...at 300 pages, to me, the book sacrifices depth for breadth. I'm not sure if Witwer was under any sort of limitation in terms of scope, but because of the quickness it feels like we are just getting highlights. There's no real attempt to try to delve deeper into Gary's personality, or to analyze his creative phases.The direct interview sources that the author has interviewed directly are surprisingly limited. Witwer interviews a few key figures but ignores a few others. One notable absence is Gail Gygax--considering that she was became closest person in his life (one could argue his True Love), this absence seems jarring, especially when we get to areas around the divorce and especially the post-TSR days. Although to be fair in that respect, Gail has not been very willing to be interviewed, and I don't know if Witwer attempted to reach out to her but was rebuffed, or just didn't attempt to contact her. Regardless of who is at fault, this hurts the biography, especially since a lot of his primary emphasis is on what family members have written.He also doesn't talk to many creative collaborators, out of the existing list, Mentzer's the only one who'd be considered one. The absence of interviews with folks like Rob Kuntz, Flint Dille, Dave Newton, Jon Creffield, and Jeff Talenian are all felt. Additionally, it's surprising that the author didn't try to get alternative perspectives from those who might have been critical or opposed to Gary, say for instance, somebody from the Arneson or Blume camps, or people who worked at TSR and were critical of Gary, just to make sure all perspectives were covered. I think that's the type of research you really need to do for a comprehensive Biography.There are also a few curious choices--why did Witwer choose Elmore and Easley in his limited pool of interviewees, considering they were more part of the art department than the gaming departments, over other folks?Another troubling thing is that the author has referenced a few things that I know Gary has denied over the years, even in private, without attributing the source. For instance, he mentioned Gary's rumored cocaine usage, but I've never seen Gary acknowledged that publicly, and I once asked him privately if he ever used that drug (he admitted to using "benzies and dexies", and a one time use of LSD--which he called "Lousy, Stupid Drug", but denied using cocaine). I'm not saying this didn't happen, but in this particular case, there's no real quote or footnote to confirm this and more importantly, who said he was using drugs. This bugs me because the accusation of that was the one time I saw Gary actually threaten legal action against somebody for suggesting that he used cocaine, and it would be nice if the book had attributed a direct quote from somebody on this subject.I will say that Witwer is willing to expand and elaborate on stuff. A blogger's review of the rough cut (actually the same review on Amazon Joseph Bloch posted here) made it sound like everything after TSR was reduced to a few paragraphs, but it looks like in this initial cut there were a few extra chapters. Also, after discussing it with Jon Creffield, Witwer did seem to approach him after I encouraged Jon to write to him. I do hope he considers an expanded edition and interviews a lot more people and can add depth to the book.As it stands, because of these omissions and flaws, I can give the book no more than 3 stars, but it deserves 3 stars because where it succeeds, it succeeds well. To use a gaming analogy, it's like the "Bell Curve" in the original DMG--he comes up as the average center. I can only hope the next printing or a follow-up comes up more to the right of the bell curve. Given that he's a new author, I think it's a decent work, and I hope second or third printings have the opportunity to expand on what's been covered here.Amazon specific information: I purchased this on the Kindle format, and it was on my Kindle right when I woke up today. The Kindle format has a flaw in the index, for some reason on the Kindle Fire HD the index doesn't appear to fit the page, the beginning of each index entry is cropped--hopefully this can be repaired and updated. Beyond that, there's no other flaws that I have found with the e-book format

A couple of years ago I read the book Of Dice and Men, a look back at the early days of Dungeons & Dragons, and, those of us nerds who played it. I was an avid player of the game back in the mid to late 70s, and have continued a fascination with the world(s) created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, the original duo behind the game. I’ve gone on to play computer based games, both early ones that were limited to being installed on your computer and played by one or a couple of people, and on, to MMORPGs, the massive universes created online like Everquest and Worlds of Warcraft.The earlier book I mentioned was mostly focused on the game itself, and the gamers who took it and ran with it. There was plenty of biographical information about the creators, but you couldn’t call it biography. Michael Witwer’s Empire of Imagination takes another run at it. As he says in the introduction, he couldn’t believe when he started researching the book that no one had ever written a biography of Gary Gygax, who, while not a household name except to those of us in the gaming world, created something that went on to be the foundation for things we take for granted in modern day life, everything from the use of computers for games, to the advent of social media. As he also points out, it’s telling, that in an episode of the pop-culture show Futurama, Gygax’s character is paired up with Lieutenant Uhura, Al Gore, and Steven Hawking – taking on the universe. The book is well written, completely engaging, and for anyone with an interest in the topic, a must read.

Just the very fact that this book exists is a wonderful thing. I feel so fortunate, to have had a chance to communicate with Gary while he was still with us. It was via email, and I was astounded when I fired off an email to his alleged email address, and it turned out to not only be valid, but the man himself answered me. We shot a few emails back and forth and I was just left in awe of the guy who was already elevated to demigod status in my life, having been an avid player of the game, but moreover, an avid reader of fantasy fiction, then just plain old, lifelong avid reader. It was all his fault. He is the reason I even know what the word demigod means. :) The guy who influenced the guys who re created human existence. Take one look at Bill Gates and you know damn well he has read the DM's guide. :)

This book covers the life of young Gary Gygax quite well. It gave me some excellent insights into the person who would one day create Dungeons, and Dragons. The author does seem to want to skip past the unflattering parts of Gary Gygax's life during adulthood however, and the gaps are noticeable. I was left wondering about Gygax's difficulties as a parent and husband and how that affected people who knew him from both work and privately. The author seems to find Gary's perspective in Gygax's youth and to a lesser extent towards the end of Gary's life, but seems to loose it during Gygax's middle years. The loss made the book feel a little incomplete to me.

This book takes me back to my childhood in the Blue Ridge, and Smokey Mountains. My family settled in the Black Mountain area(near Asheville) in Buncome county in the late 1600's. We are those Southern people the book describes as the "Black Irish" mixed with Cherokee. We talk about food while eating food, laughing way too loud and are too boisterous at the table. So, the pie recipies brought back sweet memories of picking wild blackberries along the roadside and hauling the buckets to my Grandmother so she would make us pies and jelly. It reminds me of peeling hundreds of Georgia peaches bought by the bushel, so the woman in the kitchen could turn them into canned pie fillings, peach jam, spiced peaches, and peach leather for all of our households.I love the antidotes, they are so full of the mountain people's knowledge carried down through the centuries. It is a book that is legit. The recipies are spot on. It is a book that made me yearn for my ancestors who are gone and buried in the heart of the mountains. Their stories are repeated to their great, great grandchildren today. This is what makes the book so important. It is carrying the old ways into the 21's century saving hundreds of years of lore and good food. I highly recommend buying this antidote filled cookbook.

I send this to my mom's best friend - a cook, historian, and all around expert on all things Kentucky mountain. She loved it and had never seen a book to match it. She's entertaining the long cold winter hours in the mountains and reading about things she loves. Thanks.

I really love this book! It combines my favorite subject ( Southern comfort food ) with a charming and incredibly interesting history of Southern Appalachia and it's people. The photographs and quotes make the book even more meaningful, and even though some of the recipes aren't really "do-able" nowadays due to requiring ingredients that are difficult to find or even not things most people normally eat today ( squirrel, groundhog, sorghum, to name a few ), the book still holds some gem recipes mixed in with oddities, humor, and the rich folklore! If one wants to learn how the pioneers "put up" foods of all types; the best ways to can, freeze, dry, pickle, or cure almost any food in order to keep it seemingly indefinately, this book has several chapters with complete information and great pictures as to how it was done over the years of homesteading by the many different cultures who immigrated to America. Being of Native American heritage myself, mingled with Scots-Irish, I found the book to be a precious history of my own people and their struggle for survival. Although not cheap, this book is well worth the Amazon price, not just for the recipes, history, and food related information of the times, but for all the wonderful stories and photographs it includes.

This is one of those books that tries to bridge the gap between cooking and cultural history. It mostly succeeds. The stories are a delight to read. Some are a bit too charming, unless you like that sort of thing. The recipes are traditional. As a prior reviewer noted there are a few errors, but I did not find them widespread.Get this book if you want a good collection of some Southern recipes and some good tales.

Looking back, not only at the old recipes, but the people that hunted, grew, cooked, and ate them... the way of life as it was, was truly an eye opener. if you are looking for a smattering of history with your recipes this is the book!

I ordered for a family member, then realized it wasn't the same book that I got originally. Returned.

My paternal heritage is North Carolina and through reading this I discovered the food of my childhood was Appalachian, not Southern. There is a difference. Gave me lots of good reading and recipes.

there are many great photos and locations to visit in this book, but the way it's laid out is difficult to follow. it's divided by longitude, which is unique, but within those divisions, there is no flow to the destinations. it would be very difficult to find all the information about a single country, it's just strewn throughout the book.

The book's content is okay- brief snippets of information about various sites around the world. The images in the book are a bit disappointing, there is not vibrancy in the photos. The book was also purchased as a gift and came (either due to pre- or post- shipping handling) with bent edges- I was hesitant to gift it because it looked used.

Could be the best gift ever! My boys love this book, trips to take are all over the world and are arranged by order of their GPS location as well as desired effect of trip whether it be educational, fun, romantic, etc.! Stunning photography too makes it a pleasure to leaf through as well as display for your guests.

Got this for my dad as a birthday gift, he loves it and is actually changing some of his travel plans to do some of the unique things written about in the book. I also enjoyed looking through the content, it’s nicely laid out and easy to skim through based on area.

Nice destinations are listed. But the way the destinations are organized is not practical for a regular traveller. They are arranged by longitudes which makes it really confusing if you want to explore a particular region you want to travel.

I ordered this after I glanced though this book in the store, selling for quite a bit more money, and immediately wanted to keep reading. There are so many creative ideas that your "bucket list" will become full very quickly. As you read, the ideas start at the most northern part of the world and work down to the most southern. The ideas are typically a few quick sentances which makes it very fast to read.

This is a great book to give individuals getting ready to retire or graduate college. Beautiful pictures.

As previous Indonesian citizen, I relished this book for its accurate details about Jakarta. Reading it had brought me nostalgic feelings and minute details that I've forgotten. I recommend this book if you're going to live in Jakarta or just reliving fond memories like me.

The book is relatively up-to-date, and dead-on to my personal experiences. I've shared it with some of my colleagues who have lived in Jakarta for many more years than me, and they agree it is spot-on. Not only does it give you a very precise description of everything you could possible encounter here (things I have not experienced personally, but know about through my acquaintances and friends), but it is filled with humor. I have had a hard time putting it down, and an equally hard time not laughing out loud at lots of what is written.I think the food section could be expanded, but the book is already very long, and considering the food here is so diverse, and the restaurants seems to change frequently, maybe the section is just right.This is a MUST READ for anybody serious about a trip here. For those of us who are expats living here, it is a fun book that will have you rolling in your seat at the local Kopi Luwak while you sip your kopi tubruk, guaranteed.

A truly great read which touches on the people and the exigencies of living in such an amazing city. I have lived there before and this was such a great 'catch up' of living in this fantastic country.

I used this book together with "Jakarta: 25 Excursions" to plan my time in Jakarta. The other is meant to give details about the places you visit and suggest itineraries, and both my hired local guide (search the internet - inexpensive and well worth it) and I both loved it as a resource. This book, CultureShock! Jakarta, will get you additional practical info for the cityand tourist travel info in/out of the country and CGK airport ($35 USD entry visa upon arrival since 7/2014; RPH 150,000 airport exit tax upon departure). The rest of the book is cultural info on interactions, transport, people and sights you will encounter, etc. I read a lot on wikitravel.com and virtualtourist.com, and also picked up the Lonely Planet and Instant Indonesian phrasebooks, which made life easier. Jakarta Inside Out may be a bit raw, and could be more sensitive / positive. The Indonesian people are very polite and helpful.You will need to get used to the heat and humidity if not used to working outside all day in the tropics, but thankfully there are plenty of iced tea drinks, coconut drinks, iced coffee drinks (J.Co is a great local brand; Starbucks & Duncan Donuts there too) and malls to cool off in, and to see the modern side of Jakarta too. I'd bring a washcloth/hand towel and wet wipes (and serviettes/napkins for other purposes in more rural areas), smaller change Rph bills (Rph 10,700 = $1.00 USD) and a sense of relaxed humor so that you will learn to appreciate the city.

I lived and worked in Jakarta for 5 years and this book is right on. The book showed me what to expect and how to act even at weddings. If you have never been to Jakarta before this is a must read and it will help you when dealing with the locals.

Absolutely loving the story so far. The art is great too. Really sells the emotion of the characters too. Only slight complaint I have is how Grog is characterized as a follower of Scanlan. Never got that impression on the show/cast. But it's really early, it may change. Overall I'd say 4.5 out of 5.

I had high hopes for this book and I'm not sure why. I also have Benjamin's Liquidation on the Chessboard, which he mentions in this book. Let me save you $20 and 250 pages of reading. You should simplify to a won pawn ending when you can. The end. Now I have to admit, I didn't read that book all the way to the end, so maybe it got better eventually, but I already know that you should simplify to a won pawn ending when you can, so I didn't see much profit coming from wasting my time on continuing with it.This book is similar. I read a little further in this one, but I'm also not going to finish it because, well, let me illustrate. Here is some advice from chapter 1 on playing openings. "...it is important not to rely too much on preparation. You must understand the strategies in an opening..." (p.13 and first page of the chapter). Number one, where have I heard that before? Number two, find someone who will explain those strategies to me. Most opening books are just lines and variations within variations, and that includes the ones that say you can play this opening from general principles. Believe me, I have a lot of them, and even the ones that say they will explain the strategies rarely do. (And you can't play openings from general principles unless you really enjoy coming out of the opening already lost!) Don't count on this book to be any exception. The gist: Don't prepare too much. Prepare just enough! Calculate. Don't be lazy. Do the work. Gee, thanks! Why are they keeping this stuff secret? (Oh yeah, they can make a lot more money off you if you hire them as a coach.)Most of Benjamin's advice on openings consists of 'white should have played this' or 'black should have played that.' And how are we to know that over the board? Well, you're supposed to have a plan. Really? I would never have imagined! And where does that plan come from? From preparation, of course. "Insufficient preparation can be worse than no preparation" (p.14). Write that down. There will be a quiz!Here's more advice. "Tactics can always be overlooked" (p.16). To prevent that, buy a "good book" on the opening. Play "through a lot of games on the database" (p.16). "There are so many opening 'questions' like this that you cannot possibly anticipate all of them before you encounter them. You can't simply plug in moves you know, because they may not fit when the position is slightly different. If one variable is different, you have to work out, either in prep or over the board, how it changes everything. ...apply your general knowledge and powers of logic to get through the opening" (p.16-17). And that's done OTB how? By calculation of course! You can't be lazy about that, we are cautioned. You have to do the work.I would have expected a book with a title like this to, maybe, give me some tips on how to do a better job of that. But no, there are none. Calculate. Don't be lazy. Those ARE the tips! "Having a good approach helps" (p.17). "Don't obsess about theory so much that you skimp on the fundamentals" (p.17). "If you find yourself in a situation where you can't access any plans from memory, you have to _do that work over the board_" (p.17-18). The last bit of that sentence is italicized as if it is some sort of grand revelation. Does that help you? It doesn't help me. And yet that's it. THAT is the kind of advice you will get from this book.Maybe I'm too weak to appreciate this book (1700ish). Or maybe I'm too strong (unlikely). Oh wait, I forgot! "Be alert." Maybe that helps. It doesn't get any better in the second chapter on endgames. "Good endgame play takes patience, appreciation of the initiative, and, above all, good planning" (p.37). Great! I can hardly wait for more detail on that. But there is none. Not that I saw. So I stopped reading after chapter 2. I have better things to do with my chess time.Conclusion: How dare they charge me $25 for this kind of pablum?! Save your money.

I am immediately going to study this book. It is my favourite chess subject. I met GM Joel Benjamin at Manhattan Chess Club. I had just finished my game in amateur section with Dore Sheppard and was doing a post mortem when 11 year old Joel walked by and said can I show you guys something I saw while walking by your game? He proceeded to show us many moves and variations all from memory and blew us away! It was over our heads and we knew we had just seen a chess genius!

Good learning style. Different but meaningful.

I really enjoyed this book. Joel touches on a wide variety of ills that plague me and (presumably) other non-GM level players, and has lots of relevant examples from his own games and from those of his students. Its fun to see some non-GM level games interspersed amongst Joel's clashes with other GMs, and the examples are always relevant. Recommended!

I've been a professional printer for over thirty years. I've been involved in quality and process engineering for fifteen years. I bought this book to fill in some gaps in my knowledge about the history of printing methods and processes. My interest is in process and system controls in the modern, digital printing workflow. This book provided wonderful scholarship and reliable information on print processes and methods. The author has done his homework. His descriptions of printing processes is accurate and reliable. I recommend this book without reservation for those interested in printing, in the history of printing, and, of course, in learning about how to identify the methods and processes used to produce the print under examination.

I almost said "for the beginning print lover," but even the pros might want occasional reminders about obscure processes.This book displays an incredible number of processes and variations. Even within etching, there is standard intaglio process, relief etching, intaglio so deep it's amost relief, spit-biting or open-biting - well, a very long list. This gives an exacting look at the marks specific to each process, and gives good diagnostic descriptions. A special strength in this book is the differential diagnoses, the questions to ask that help distinguish two very similar kinds of marks. Every point made in the text is illustrated real samples, and that makes for a heck of a lot of illustrations.I have almost no quibbles with this text. There are just a few minor points that Gascoigne could have brought out more clearly. First is that Japanese woodcuts are under-represented. It's a rich tradition with a number of distinguishing features: gradations of ink hand-placed on a block, occasional use of mica for luster, and occasional use of un-inked "blind" impressions to impress texture into the paper. Second is a mark that I think is unique to drypoint: the line is often asymmetric, crisp on one side and blurred on the other, capturing the asymmetry of the drypoint burr. The split drypoint line is more famous but, in my experience, less common. I've seen it only in the most aggressively worked drypoints, such as some by Picasso. Third is a feature of some dust-ground aquatints: that the white marks can sometimes form a connected mesh around the black dots, where a spirit ground always has a black ocean dotted with white islands. I know these are minor points, and I hope you see how few there are.I'm a process nut. It's not the only way I enjoy prints, and not the way everyone enjoys them. For me, though, it really adds something to know how the maker's hand created each mark that I see. This isn't strictly a process book, and only accidentally a book of process history. It's a book about how a print looks, and seeing even more in the finest part of its looks. In the end, that's really the best reason to love a print.//wiredweirdPS: A little while ago, I was given a very nice color print. It was done in mezzotint style, using burnishers to work from dark to light. Instead of a rocker-made ground, though, it had an aquatint ground. Color came from inking au poupee, dabbed on the plate. The giver was quite surprised that I read its story so precisely. Read this book, and you'll know just what I saw.

First of all, this is an EXCELLENT book...perhaps the best book I've ever read claiming to help with identifying "things." I help my wife with her antiques business, and try to learn as much as I can across a very broad range of subjects. I've read books on furniture, clocks, silversmithing, jewelry, porcelains, etc. etc., so I'm comparing this book to many others I have read. I love prints, hence I purchased this book and find it truly useful to narrow down what a particular print is, and how it was printed. Once read, I now look at some prints with awe at the technical prowess of the artists and their amazing accomplishments. So why did I give this book 4 stars and not 5?It's missing one chapter in my opinion: and this chapter should provide a brief overview of other "drawn" forms of art. Others may disagree, saying this book is about prints, and adding watercolors, pencil drawings, india ink, oils, etc. is out of scope. But a chapter aimed at the novice to help quickly discriminate a true watercolor from a good print of that watercolor would be valuable (to me at least). A case in point...I purchased what I thought was a print (at auction, it was sold as a print), but on closer inspection I "think" it's a watercolor. The overlapping brush stokes and uneven distribution of color seemingly caused by a brush appear to distinguish it from a print. None of the illustrations in the book "look" like this. Having a couple of illustrations showing what to look for in a watercolor would help. I don't know anything about the author, but if there's ever a new edition, including such a chapter would prompt me to purchase the update.This one issue aside, I would totally recommend this book to anyone with any interest in the printed art form. Great book.
