About the Author
Sam Devlin has been in love with boats since childhood--a fact perhaps influenced by his first bedroom, a ship replica complete with curved walls and a seaberth. This is a great book. Every aspect of stitch and glue boatbuilding is covered in great detail, from shop practice to lofting, assembling and finishing the boat. The style is plain and enjoyable and the drawings are excellent. The author's love for boats, fine materials and good workmanship is evident in every page. I found just a few minor issues. First, the quality of the photographs is questionable. Moreover, from the builders' perspective, some more hints and suggestions on how to use power tools to cut sheet plywood, as well as a more in-depth discussion on epoxy-sealing the hull, would have been useful. Apart from those points, the book is excellent and should be in every boatbuilder's bookshelf.

I had never built a stitch and glue boat. Shoot!! I had never built any boat. I bought this book to help me figure out the finer points. I am completely satisfied with the way it was written and the information I gleaned from it. The boat turned out great.
I have read this book several times. He has a clear and logical way of presenting the stages of construction. His web site is informative and his video is equally as instructive. In terms of a complete "How to" series, I only wish other disciplines were as good.In addition to the quality of his construction, I am particularly fond of his designs. Most other stitch and glue plans lack the elegance of Sam's designs.
This is a great book for anyone looking to build their own wooden boat using the "stitch and glue" method. I don't really like Devlin's designs but the information he provides on the actual building process is very good. A wealth of tips and tricks to help you find your way.
I bought this book last week and I love it! This book shows you in detail how to adapt any set of boat plans, or any existing boat, to the stitch & glue method of plywood & fiberglass boat construction. Mr. Devlin shares his experience and building techniques with you in a style that is engaging and entertaining. If you are interested in learning this type of boatbuilding, buy this book first! You won't be disappointed.
Devlin does a good job on touching all aspects of wooden boat building and some maintenance. His line drawings as well as the finished product are very appealing to the eye.
Great book. Very informative even for first time builder. I have been reading other books on the same topic and this is one of the best!
