An excellent book and one which should be required annual reading for every doctor and medical researcher!I read "The Microbe Hunters" years ago and, like most others, had assumed medical knowledge had progressed in logical steps, that massive research programs were the solution to intractable medical problems and that research activities and funding were based on the likelihood of successful outcomes. Wow was I wrong!Subsequent to reading "Happy Accidents..." I found that others were already aware of the problem and are quite disgruntled with everything that is and isn't happening in medicine and medical research."Smokescreens" was one description I heard, citing the example that follows: Patient A develops cancer at 53 and it is discovered at age 57 and he dies at 58. Patient B develops the same cancer at 53 but it was discovered at age 55 and dies at 58. Patient B is statically attributed with with two years of additional lifespan when all that actually happened was being diagnosed two years earlier. (The example assumes everything is identical which, of course, they never are.) It is shocking to realize progress in treatment is actually only progress in diagnostics!The casual misuse of antibiotics portends a disaster in the making as microbes develop immunity to the wonder drugs of the 20th century. With many staph type infections and the flesh eating bacteria there if often only a single course of treatment that remains effective. Should that treatment be breached nothing remains to prevent the mass epidemics prevalent prior to the 1950s.Read this book! But a copy, anonymously if necessary, for your doctor. Get one for your congressman and senator since government funding supports so much medical research. But take action. The life you save might well be your own!

Reading how some very important drugs and diagnostic tests were done makes us realize that we need to look in all directions for solutions. Our healthcare system is so mired in bureaucracy that serendipitous discoveries are harder to achieve. The other fact is the way that Big Pharma is more of a money machine instead of an entity with the customer's well being as first priority.

We’ve all heard stories of serendipitous scientific discoveries at some point, usually from a high school teacher or college professor. Who can forget the sloppy chemist who - as the story goes - discovered artificial sweeteners thanks to the inadvisable habit of eating lunch next to the bench? There’s certainly something to be said for blind luck. Yet, these stories underplay the importance of serendipity and unpredictability in fueling life-saving scientific discoveries and changing the way we think about a particular problem. Many advances in medical care and technology can be traced back to an unexpected discovery by scientists working on a seemingly unrelated problem. Several episodes in medical history are discussed in the book “Happy Accidents: Serendipity in Major Medical Breakthroughs in the Twentieth Century” by Dr. Morton Myers.A naval battle in World War II might seem an odd setting for a story on cancer research. Lt. Col. Stewart Alexander, a medical officer stationed at the port of Bari, noted the acrid smell of garlic following an aerial bombardment by the Nazis and suspected chemical weapons. Sailors who survived the bombing by swimming in the bay water - contaminated with diluted chemicals - did not appear “shocked” as had victims of mustard gas in World War I, but would go on to die at a higher rate. Myers delineates how a line of research on the effects of mustard compounds - initiating from Alexander’s reports - found that lymphoid tissues were particularly sensitive and then led to a class of compounds being developed as a therapy for lymphoma cancer. Their development was an early benchmark for modern clinical cancer research.Another chapter in the book illustrates how an idea can be ahead of its time. Judah Folkman had picked up an idea from the 1940s that cancer cells send an “angiogenic” signal to recruit new blood vessels to deliver nutrients. Folkman’s lab identified the angiogenic protein VEGF and inhibitors of tumor angiogenesis, but it took decades for the cancer research field to take notice. At a conference in 1987, the cancer researcher Noelle Bouck had not been intending to attend Folkman’s talk (she was resting her feet in the back of the room when he went to the podium) but after seeing his results, said to herself “This guy’s really onto something!”. She decided to switch her research focus to angiogenesis, and her efforts along with Folkman and other colleagues led to the identification of angiostatin and endostatin. Today, to complement traditional cancer therapies, doctors can slow cancer growth by inhibiting angiogenesis with drugs such as Avastin.Myers describes many more episodes that illustrate how research in a seemingly disparate field led to advances in understanding cancer. Ethnobotany of tea made from Jamaican Periwinkle led to the identification of vinblastine. Studies on bacteria being exposed to electric fields led to cisplatin. A veterinarian studying the reproductive system of dogs discovered a role for sex hormones in cancer progression. Most of the chapters work well, but a few don’t quite fit the serendipity narrative. Nevertheless, his writing is inspiring and accessible for the scientist, physician and lay reader alike, as he recounts the steps from a curious observation to development of a therapeutic molecule.More importantly, in a time when big-science initiatives seem to be announced every few months, Myers makes the persuasive argument that medical research needs to account for the possibility that the next breakthrough may very well come from outside of these targeted, goal-oriented programs. This has been once again brought to light since the publishing of the book, when CRISPR-CAS technology burst onto the scene. It is highly unlikely that a large-scale research initiative to build gene-editing tools would generate something as elegant as CRISPR-CAS. Policy makers would do well to learn about the history of medical advances and mis-steps, and putting this book in their hands would be a start.

This is a well written book about the mysterious daughter, Louise. The author moves smoothly through her life and times. However, for those of us not intimately acquainted with the Royal family, it would have been nice to have a genealogy chart showing, at the very least, Victoria and Albert and their children and spouses. I had to stop reading more often than I would like to “google” which child or spouse the author was talking about. Having a simple genealogy chart would have made it easy to check. Also, because I do not live in England, a simple map showing the Royal residences and palaces would have been nice. When the Royal family set off for Balmoral, it would be nice to be able to see on a map where they were headed. The benefit of a map is often overlooked by many, many authors, thus it isn’t a fault of this particular author, I suppose. At the end, a fun book to read and kept me wanting to turn the pages for the next exciting fact.

The story of Princess Louise is fascinating, but author often treats speculation as fact and is also sloppy about easily verifiable facts. For example she asserts that Prince Phillip is a great-grandchild of Alexandra (the last Russian empress) when in fact he is the descendent of her sister. It makes it hard to trust arguments about the alleged/hypothetical illegitimate child or other supposedly hushed-up scandals. It’s a good story though.

I have just finished this book and really enjoyed it. I knew almost nothing about Princess Louise and found it most informative, not only about her, but her siblings. As to her mother, Queen Victoria, a whole different, and I think more factual picture was presented, rather than the loving mother that is usually portrayed. A great deal of research went into this book.

Was nice to read a book about Queen Victoria's most interesting daughter. While her sisters are know for who they married or gave birth to. She can be remembered for what she did and what she believed in. It is sad as the author pointed out that she can't get more research material on the princess. But she did a good job with what she had.

Very interesting story about one of Queen Victoria's daughter. I read a lot and am always amazed when I can find new details about a subject I thought I knew everything about. I've read many books about Queen Victoria's children and this gave new insight into one of them.

I really enjoyed this book - I had a hard time putting down. It's obvious that the author put a tremendous amount of time into the research for the book and, to me, it was worth the effort. The book is a fairly easy read - not the dull, college text book type of read that it could easily have been. For me, the only reason this is a 4 star vs 5 star review is that a genealogy chart someplace in the book would have helped keep track of all of Queen Victoria's multiple children/spouses.

Very interesting! She was a rebelious daughter trying to get out from her mother's influence. She was an artist and was friends with many in the wild artistic community. Scandals and secrets followed her.

As a lover of history and stories about the British royal families, I found this biography very interesting. I had never read about the Victorian era. In fact, what I did know was what I had seen on BBC TV series like Upstairs/Downstairs and Downton Abbey (although both were set in the Edwardian Age.) Nevertheless, events in the book and the societal attitudes seemed to be related to a few of the plot lines in the TV shows. Princess Louise was, indeed, mysterious and her story, compelling. She was able to break away from her overbearing, even smothering, parents and be the woman she was born to be. I recommend it.

Public executions have always attracted large crowds of curious citizens. This was even truer in the pre-mass communication, pre-radio, pre-television era. When the most exciting forms of entertainment were traveling minstrels and circuses, executions were a favorite form of spectator sport. It was even required in some areas that everyone witnesses punishments in hopes that they would avoid breaking the same laws. History records huge crowds coming from great distances to see the final act of their fellow humans. Hangings, impalements, drowning, beheadings, burning people at the stake, drawing and quartering and disemboweling were horrible events. Carrying out these legal executions was a dirty job, but somebody had to do it. And most people weren't anxious to have the job. Sometimes other condemned prisoners had their own sentences commuted if they served as the executioners of their fellow condemned prisoners. Since executioners were considered practitioners of the worst job on the planet, many of the people serving as the actual final instrument for carrying out the dictates of the judicial system, were ostracized by society. This book does a decent job of portraying the world of the executioner and details the lives of many of England's most infamous executioners. Since so many of these people didn't have any idea of what they were doing, it was a major breakthrough when some of the more sensitive executioners began to develop more humane ways to carry out death sentences. Eventually, these men devised scientific methods to instantly break their client's necks rather than letting them slowly strangle to death. Likewise for developing machines to instantly cut off heads rather than maybe having an executioner have to swing his ax or sword half a dozen times to complete his work. The book is morbidly fascinating. The author did a good job of trying to stick with the facts and not editorialize on the subject of the death penalty. The author's bias against the death penalty does show up in the text occasionally and usually results in him making bleeding heart (no pun intended) conclusions that defy both common sense and historical fact. The book is still worth reading because it shows that humanity is definitely making progress and is at least trying to be as humane as possible in cases of capital punishment. It also introduces and discusses many fascinating historical characters on both sides of law. It's good to see that some high-minded individuals can make even the dirtiest job in the world more humane and scientific. Those were traits that many of the viewers of these macabre public events didn't really appreciate or desire. Many actually preferred long, drawn out shows and that morbid fact is why most executions are no longer major public events.

Although it was interesting and informative, I found that it was a bit difficult to get through and I kept putting it down after a few pages; however, it is a book that is easy to put down and then pick up again because it examines different times, places, and people throughout the book.

This is an interesting book that covers the peripheral history of justice and punishment in Great Britain. It is well-written, and interesting. It seems a little dated now, and it is biased against capitol punishment. This reflects my own views, so I didn't find it offensive or intrusive.

This adorable book is a great way to learn to draw cartoon animals! The book has sections teaching real animal anatomy, which the author then uses to teach the reader how to create cartoon and caricature animals. This book is great for everyone from absolute beginners to intermediate artists, and I found the equine anatomy section to be particularly helpful. The author obviously understands horse anatomy well enough to explain how to draw horses in a clear and understandable way. She even has a section for tack, labeling each part of the saddle and bridle. All in all, a very fun and easy-to-understand book.
