I almost didn't buy this book because the sample pages did not let me see the names of the recipes or their ingredients. My family is into plain food-nothing exotic or hard to pronounce. I found plenty that won't scare the natives:For example:Pork Loin with Apples and OnionsQuick EnchiladasSlow Oven-Smoked BrisketItalian Style MeatballsChicken Braised with Onions and TomatoesNo guilt fish tendersOld fashioned Beef StewThere are also some new things to try:Caprese-Style Polenta and SteakQuick Chicken Tikka MasalaQuinoa Turkey CasseroleMy husband and I saw Dr. Lustig on CNN. Because of that lecture my husband gave up pop and is his normal, sane, self again instead of the volatile person he'd become. I doubled my veggies and have lost 2 pounds in a week :). I was glad to get the cookbook for more ideas-especially for making basics like barbecue sauce without sugar.Bon Appetit!
I was extremely disappointed in this book. It is as if Dr. Lustig didn't even read the recipes having someone else create them for the book. I have been very impressed with Dr. Lustig's work, his TED talks, his adamant confrontation of the sugar and food giants. Yet, recipe after recipe contained way beyond Dr. Lustig's personal recommendation as to the amount of sugar to consume on a daily basis. I was expecting to find a good series of quality recipes contained within the suggestions of sugar intake. Instead, more than one recipe had gram after gram of excess sugar.That said, please consider buying his original book "Fat Chance" and listening to his TED talks. There is extreme value in what he is saying. I think of him every time I go to the grocery store including the health food grocers reading label after label with shock.
I give this only a 4 star because the format of the cookbook is not good for quick and easy access in the kitchen, however the quality of recipes is a five star. The front half of the book reiterates what I have already read in the Fat Chance book... Which, by the way, IS THE BEST EVER explanation you will ever read on why we are a fat scociety and how you can change that for yourself and family. I did not learn this in nursing school. Such a shame that our food has been bastardized and brought us to the illness that financially breaks us before we go. It is the cause of the failure in our healthcare system. As for this cookbook... I wish it was more conducive to utilize in the kitchen. Hoping that Cindy (chef and co-author) will realize that and produce a real cookbook or maybe an app to be a tool in my kitchen.
I LOVE the book, Fat Chance, but this cookbook was a real disappointment. The recipes use ingredients that the book said to avoid! It was a mixed message and not at all welcome as I had already implemented the suggestions before receiving the cookbook. Don't bother ordering this because there are better, plant-based recipes out there...
Followed the concepts in the book with excellent results. Dropped 30 pounds with no other difference in my daily habits other than vowing processed sugar and processed carbs out of my life; I have not weighed under 225 lbs in over two decades.
If you are even the least bit curious about your health and the future of the crate you are carting around called your body, this book is a must to read. At first I was a bit put off by the writer's voice and insistence that the Government (which we ALL trust implicitly, ya ya ya) is in cahoots with big food and so on, but as the facts were laid out about the state of Sugar and FCS products in our diet, and the effect that sugar products have on our health, I came to a point where I wanted congressional action too, and NOW. But as a source of information, this book is dynamite. A must read for every parent and person in the World... We, the USA does not have it right, and this book says why. Read it, and you will see, this is not just another rant book, this is a must read in order to care for you life... Lustig is a Moses. A Paul, A culinary Messiah.
Great book, explains why we need to restrict our consumption of ALL sugars to save or bodies from diabetes and excessive weight, i. e. FATness!!! Explains the problems from excessive intake of simple carbohydrates in the form of sugars. Also, lists the fifty plus names for "sugar" to help you manage your diet. Lustig is a pediatric MD, specializing in treating obese children and in his practice noted the prevalence of sugar in the diets of the kids he was treating. These observation lead him to find that the effect of the fructose half of the common sugar molecule was basically acting as a poison by it's effect on our liver where it is processed and then either stored there or in our body as FAT. You will find this book eminently readable without using a lot of medical language. The recipes, which were created by his coauthor, are all designed to limit sugars and still be nourishing and tasty.
I bought this book without reading the book that spawned it. It was a smart investment. This book has so many good recipes that help you keep sugar out of your life. I have been making the salad dressing and other condiment recipes weekly -- as a way to save our family from the sugar tyranny we are subjected to by food producers. You have to accept cooking as a way of life -- but what you get is great, healthy food that reduces your chances of obesity and diabetes. Seems like a fair trade to me.
