I will echo many reviews here: this book is a fantastic window into the world of icons and their functions. While giving a little history of each of the four icons he uses to illustrate his points, Nouwen spends a lot of time explaining how he came to see different theological and spiritual truths within the icons. Praying with (not to) the icons provides a different medium for prayer that is bound to be helpful for those that try.This book cannot be recommended enough, and a huge benefit is that the language is clear, concise, and to the point. This is not like other heady religious books.

I've never read anything by Nouwen that I didn't like. I have been to Eastern Europe several times, and each time, tried to purchase an icon or some religious artifact to remember my trip by. I had seen Orthodox Christians praying with Icons (not praying to, mind you...praying with), and wanted a better understanding of the practice. Nouwen writes that they are to be used like windows into heaven, not as base objects to be worshiped. Nouwen actually takes several icons and explains the meaning behind them (such as the empty space at the table in Rublev's "Trinity") in order to help the reader learn to focus on certain aspects of faith. Offers clarity to the practice of praying with icons. A good companion piece to Linette Martin's "Sacred Doorways".

Love this book re how to pray with icons... but was disappointed with this new publication format... The original was much more expressive of the purpose of Nouwen's book...

While I have strongly differing opinions on the icons he reviews, Nouwen is always worth reading. In the case of the Trinity icon he lets his political views slip through.

The title says it all. Understanding the icon in order to further one’s relationship with the Lord.

This is a beautiful book to read if you have an interest in the beautiful icons and the meaning behind them. Perhaps you have seen these icons in Catholic and Orthodox churches here and abroad, icons are a Liturgical Art, and have significant meaning behind each step in the painting process. The author has done a beautiful job of explaining the meaning as he sees it with each of five icons. It is a beautiful book to own.

Exactly that for which I was looking; a small yet mighty book by a favorite author on a subject of great interest. This is well thought out, the icon's researched, studied and as understanding and spiritual insights were expanded, adimiration grew and the icons became treasured and loved. The author shared his inspiration and explanations with warmth, wisdom and clarity.

Fabulous book but beware the color version of the 4 icons are in the book right after the cover and are not specified in the Table of Contents. The chapter versions are in black and white which are NOT helpful for the full experience.

I just receive this item today and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! Just one thing... it needs a program showing who narrated each book! Please make this :) I'm sooooo delighted to hear the Children of Israel (Israelites) read the Word of YAHAWAH. Yep... what I'm saying is true... biblical prophecy, archaeological findings, and many books show evidence the American negroes are descendants of the Israelites of the bible. Isaiah 11:10-12. Wow! What a great narrative of the bible! Spoken by African American actors and clergy whose work we have come to know and respect and whose voices we readily recognize. It is like listening to a full scale movie production, with music and sound effects, while at the same time maintaining the accuracy and integrity of biblical teachings. It encourages us to take the meaning of scriptural references to the next level. The CDs capture your attention and they leave you wanting more. What a wonderful resource for going deeper into the things of the Lord!

Okay first let me say that this particular version is an mp3 cd set. That means if your CD player will not recognize mp3 formatted disc's it will not play these CD's. I thought my car CD player was capable but it was not, but that is okay. I downloaded the discs on to my MBP and then put them on my phone and I listen to it on my way to work and on my way home. Now if you have the software you can burn a copy that is formatted as an audio cd but uncompressing them to an audio format would be a lot of CD's. Example the audio CD version has 60 discs for the old testament and I believe it is 19 or 20 for the new testament, so 80 discs, where this mp3 version is 8 discs. Now, the way this Bible is being presented is so awesome, it is being dramatized, there are 400 people who were involved in recording this, people like; L.L. Cool J, Cuba Gooding Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, and many more. Some of who I know and some I do not know, but these people are reading the bible as if it were a movie script. This is like a movie without the visual aspect of the movie. I love being able to listen to this in the car it makes the car ride to and from work productive for me. I also get a chance to hear the books of the bible that are for me hard to read like Leviticus, I think we can all agree that that particular book of the bible can be hard to read. I highly recommend this Bible to anyone who is breathing. Even if you are not a believer the production value of this bible reading is well worth the money and you will be listening to some of you favorite movie, TV, and radio stars bring the bible to life. There is nothing like this that I have ever encountered and it is something that will be worthy of passing from generation to generation in you family. Buy this, now!

I bought this a few weeks ago and I CANNOT stop listening to it. Because of this audio Bible, I have spent more time in Scripture in the past few weeks than I have all year! Wow! This Bible has God's anointing all over it.When I listen to this Bible, I am transported into the writing in way that is so powerful, vivid, and real. The words spring to life for me and convict me in a way that is profound and moving. This is THE best purchase I have made all year.The readings are AWESOME. Seriously awesome. The sound effects and music add so much meaning and emotion. The entire work is executed beautifully.I literally can't stop listening to this Bible - I put it on while I get ready in the morning, while I jog on the treadmill, while folding laundry, while playing fetch with my dog, etc.I uploaded the entire thing to Google Music, and I stream it from my phone wherever I go. I have been soaking up God's word day and night.What an absolute gift and blessing it has been to own this Bible.Right now, as I write this review, it is past midnight and I am about to go to sleep, but I can't help but play a few chapters of Luke before I pass out. I absolutely love this audio Bible. I listen to it on the way to and from work and I've gotten pretty far. I hear things that I usually have missed because when I'm reading the Bible sometimes I'm in a hypnotic mode as I'm trying to read things, but as I listen to it I think to myself, "I don't remember that" and I go back in the Bible and lo and behold there it is. I really love it. It's a great way to look at things, the way people said things are different as well. Not that the content is different, but the tone of their voice. Sometimes I read something and I didn't think the person would have said it in a certain way but listening to it gives me another insight into how that person might have been thinking. I really love it it's really great I definitely recommend this product.

I very randomly decided to read this book because I needed something short to read on the train while commuting and I'm glad I did so. I can't say it's my favorite Hourly History book because this isn't the kind of history that interests me the most or that I know a lot of but I did think it was a decent read and some aspects were very fascinating to read about.Before reading this book I knew absolutely nothing about The Dutch East India Company. I've always liked the age of exploration but I've always been told about countries like England, Spain and Portugal and not about Holland at all, which is really odd considering I live in Belgium. You'd think I'd have heard more about all that.I was very surprised to learn that when The Dutch East India Company was at it's high point in its time it was more successful than companies like Apple in this time and day. If that doesn't blow your mind, I don't know what will. So the little facts like that were interesting to learn and read about. The chapter of The Golden Age was my probably my favorite.Overall, The Dutch East India Company: A History From Beginning to End by Hourly History was a short read that I easily read in 30-ish minutes. I think people who are particularly interested in this topic will enjoy it a bit more but I still thought it was a fascinating topic and good read.

Hourly History gives us a very readable history of a Dutch company formed in 1602, became the world’s first multinational corporation, controlled the sea for some 200 years, controlled many businesses, amassed an extremely large fortune, and was responsible for the formation of many nations, until 1780 when it went bankrupt. Hourly History describes five reasons for its decline, including that which had caused the decline of most nations, corruption.

Some reviewers of this series seem to miss the point that a complex situation is deliberately condensed into an hour's read.This one: even more complex than most.That said …. I'd have liked some more brief information on: the need for spices in Europe and the resulting high prices, how much it cost to build one of their ships (and how long did it take), how many in a crew, how much cargo they carried in one ship, etc....?There seems to have been some in-depth research but the story does not really flow as much as it could.STILL - another interesting look at a very involved enterprise.

The Dutch East India Company was quite the impressive Global Enterprise, arguably the template for the modern Global Traders in existence even to this day. This book gives a pretty decent overview of its founding, history and eventual downfall of what many might say was the largest and most profitable in history. Thank you for an expanded view of just what made up the Dutch East India Company, its early importance and its demise due to things that ensnare many large successful companies; being top-heavy, corruption, changing markets and just living past its own usefulness. A nice read for those history buffs and people curious about how business was done in an age gone by.

Somewhat interesting but, didn't have the "wow factor" most of the "Hourly History" books have. It is interesting that the Dutch East India Company was the first major international business company. Their violent expansion by force is just another example of greedy men trying to take over and monopolize the world.

The Dutch East India Company: A History From Beginning to EndThe information is amazing. I had no idea what an impact this company had on countries across the globe, nor how dominant it was during its golden age or how it gave rise to the rich culture of the Dutch. It also had its own army and brutality was a factor in the company's two century reign. Fascinating.

While I had heard of The Dutch East India Company, I did not realize the effect this one company had on modern business. The book is well written and easy to follow.Studying the East India Company should be a required for all business students and this book would be a good start

Too bad that the author choose to treat such an obviously compelling story with only broad brush information. This book is more of an outline of a proper history.
