This is a suspenseful "who done it" story involving 2 people who could not be more opposite. What I love about Ms. Marton's writing is that she integrates LOL dialog to break up the seriousness of the story. Veterans acclimating to civilian life and suicide are very real and very important topics that need to be addressed better by our government and society. My father-in-law is a WWII vet and he still has a hard time coming to terms with what he saw and did during the war. His brother, also a WWII vet, was the same way. They both often talked of suicide and have received counseling for it which is why these types of stories always hold my interest.I believe Ms. Marton does a great job with taking something that is out of the box and created a very interesting story around it. I believe the characters were well developed and I love H/h that are not your typical characters. Great story and I do recommend it.
This review is a first for me… It's the first time that I've reviewed a book that I switched back and forth between listening to the audio version and reading the Kindle version. Whispersync really is pretty cool.I loved this book – while I was reading it – so 5 stars for Dana Marton's writing; it's what I've come to expect of her books. Descriptive prose, a strong male lead and a strong female lead, although not someone who is physically strong.I'm sorry to say that I didn't enjoy listening to this story very much. When I switched to audio my attention drifted from the book and I had to go back and read the part I'd just listened to. I can't really put my finger on it but I think I would have enjoyed this story more if the narrator had been male instead of female. I think the voice was almost too soothing. When reading the story, in my mind the story felt more suspenseful and I kind of fell in love with Cole. Hearing his words in a deep female voice just didn't really work for me that well. So, I have to give the narrator 3 stars.I think the story starts out in kind of an unusual way – describing what happened to someone an hour before he died. I was a tiny bit confused at first but loved the way it ended up making sense later in the story. I also think that Dana did a great job of hiding the identity of the villain until she wanted us to know who it was.The story had my heart pounding in places, breaking in others and ultimately brought it all together. Silent Threat was a thoroughly satisfying and enjoyable story to read. I loved Dana Marton's Broslin Creek series, and although it has ended, Silent Threat returns to the same community with a host of new characters to get to know and live - and a couple of old ones popping up as well.There's a synopsis, so I won't rehash the plot. This book, although definitely a romance, does broach the very serious subject of injured soldiers, and the assistance available for their rehabilitation and reintegration to civilian society. It made me think. It doesn't seem like humanity is heading towards peace and harmony anytime soon, so perhaps we, the people they served, need to ask ourselves the question, are we doing enough to help them? Hopefully, some of the options mentioned in this book indicate that we are at least heading in the right direction. But I digress.Although the main characters have issues and injuries to overcome, it's not a downbeat book by any means. There is an intriguing mystery and a murder to solve, and a seemingly unlikely romance to kindle. I found it very hard to put down, and I am definitely looking forward to more from this new series.
I listened to the audio version of this book, and I thought the narrator really nailed it.I found the heroine, Annie, to be refreshing and enjoyable. She didn't jump to conclusions, or speak without thinking. I loved her approach to life. Something like I might do, except without the skunks, LOL.I liked Cole, with his vulnerability and strengths. I thought the lip reading thing was a bit convenient, but eh, stranger things have happened in real life.The pacing was excellent, the action exciting. I did figure out who the bad guy was pretty early on, but then again I doubted myself several times, too.Seems like I had one smallish eye roll at something... oh yeah, the whole buff guy shirtless in the hospital and the intimate scene directly after that. But it didn't do more than make me shake my head.I do appreciate that these books have very little in the way of cursing and the intimate scenes are very mild, almost sweet. (Almost...) But still steamy.I'm very glad I found Dana Marton. 😄
Silent Threat was GREAT! I have been a fan of Dana Marton for years and I think this is her best book yet! The book longer some of the others which is a big plus for books I love. The characters are outstanding! I like that neither is traditionally gorgeous but that doesn't really matter since I create my own image. They were intelligent and acted according to their characters with no magic switches. The suspense part almost drove me trying to figure out the villain although went I guessed about halfway through the book, I was right. I like that too; I am not a fan of villains coming out of left field in a case like this one. There are so many elements and details Ms. Marton created that I liked and appreciated but it is easiest just to say, I LOVED it.I was fascinated by the ecotherapy concept but do have trouble believing that soldiers start buying in to the magic of nature quickly but maybe it can happen in a short span of time. I know standard methods of treating PTSD and the mental and emotional devastation of war are not working very well so I love the idea. And veterans do deserve a happily ever after.
