I read through this book twice, once on Google books, then the hard copy when it arrived from Amazon. The main purpose of this review is to let people know what the basic structure of the book is, to help minimize the chance that anyone will be disappointed as far as what is covered in the book.The first chapter gives some backgroud information on Harris, much of it in the spirit of David Sexton's 'Strange World of Thomas Harris'. Following this is some basic information on the novels and movies, somewhat similar to what is in O'Brien's 'The Hannibal Files'. The chapter concludes with information on Harris's literary heritage.The subject of chapter 2 is Harris's first novel, Black Sunday. There is a brief introduction, a section on critical reception, then a couple pages on plot development, and then separate sections for each of the major characters (Michael Lander, Dahlia Iyad, David Kabakov, and Rachel Bauman). Following this is information on Harris's writing style for Black Sunday - to quote the author, "[Harris's] language in this first novel is nowhere near as colorful or baroque as it will become in, say, Hannibal". The chapter wraps up with a section on symbols and a section on themes. The author considers one of the themes of Black Sunday to be transformation.Chapter 3 covers Red Dragon. The layout of this chapter is very similar to that described above, except that each of the chapters on the Lecter novels has a section on allusions (in addition to symbols and themes). Harris's writing style in Red Dragon is still "fairly minimalist". The section on allusions gets into Blake's 'Red Dragon' paintings, among other subjects.Chapters 4, 5, and 6 cover The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising, respectively. The layout of each of these three chapters is basically the same as that on Red Dragon.As the title of this review indicates, this book covers the novels, not the movies, except that there is a little information on the movies in the first chapter (as mentioned above).
