Rob Cleveland Bio: Rob Cleveland is an award winning author, professional storyteller, workshop leader, accomplished film and stage actor, as well as a popular comedian. Rob has authored seven Story Cove picture books. He is also a popular keynote speaker for state and regional reading conferences where he shares his perspective on the unique role that folktales play in our lives and the critical contribution that the oral tradition can make in helping young children develop their core reading skills. In addition, Rob is storyteller-in-residence at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History in Atlanta. Great book for kids! I got this, along wuth several others, for my friend's daughter (she just turned 6) who was adopted from Vietnam. My friend and her daughter traveled back there to visit her place of birth, and the feedback I got was that this book was very helpful (especially on the flights) in helping her learn more about the language, customs, foods, and culture of Vietnam. This one was particularly fun for her in learning one of the folktales!

a fun version of how a tiger gets his stripes. Grandkids 4 and 7 were interested and liked it.

Nice book written in American style English. Easy to follow and nice cartoon style pictures. It is a nice little story based on a traditional tale, but it has been adapted to modern tastes using modern cartoon styling and modern American English.

Used for a summer camp and the children loved it.

The book is pretty faithful to the original Vietnamese tale that my Vietnamese friends have told me, and the book does a nice job of relaying the story. The illustrations are nice and vibrant, as well. Too bad it's not bilingual English-Vietnamese.

Great folk story from Vietnam about a tiger searching for wisdom and getting out-witted by "man." The moral of the story is good for the age recommendations (4-8) and it was an easy book to follow for my preschooler who loves to read! The graphics were one of the better ones in the Story Cove series too. Its nice to see folktales from other parts of the world available.

Didn't look thought it was a CD or DVD but love it as a story read it to my Vietnamese wife who enjoyed but does not recall it from her childhood.Tony Green

After reading Murder of Ravens, the first in her Gabriel Hawke novels, I can see why she is so well-liked.Her writing is well-crafted, gripping, authentic. The story appeals right from the beginning, mainly because of her unique protagonist, Fish & Wildlife State Trooper Gabriel Hawke. Readers will eagerly follow every step (and miss-step) of his investigation into this complex, multi-faceted murder.Yes, I said that Hawke was a State Trooper, and “cozies” usually have an amateur sleuth for the protagonist. By rights this book could be called a police procedural. BUT, it meets the other cozy requirements. No sex scenes, although our handsome, hulky Hawke does have a few pretty warm thoughts about a woman in the story. The violence is mostly off-stage; the very occasional “language” is mild; and the story takes place in the small towns, mountains, and forests of NE Oregon.The set up: Using the ancient tracking skills he learned from his Nez Perce grandfather, Hawke follows the hoof prints of what he believes are three poachers. When he comes to a clearing, he discovers a body; that of a local man notorious for his licentious activities and misbehavior. At the crime scene there is also a biologist who tracks wolves by the radio collars they wear. Curiously, the victim has a collar around his neck, tightened enough to strangle him.Because he found the body, Hawke requests to be in on the investigation. He immediately begins a detailed search, tracking down people, forensic evidence, and physical proofs. With the inherent “eagle-eye” of a Native American, he sees signs and patterns invisible to the rest of the task force.The wide circle of possibilities as to who the murderer could be is what makes this a satisfying mystery. And as the clues begin to fall into place, readers will be on the edge of their seats, never certain if it will be one of the disgusting suspects, or… one their favorite characters. After a massive investigation, led mostly by Hawke, the solution is revealed. It is mind-boggling. You will love it!I’m looking forward to Number Two in the series. I loved this story! Gabriel Hawke finds a biologist standing over a dead body...This is Paty Jager's newest series - and I am already wanting more! Hawke is a State Trooper and Fish & Wildlife Officer all rolled into one. His best pal is Dog... and a mule named... Horse! :) Once again, we are given a strong character from the Nez Perce tribe. He is a strong man yet so very real. We have other characters in the area who spice things up not only in Hawke's life but also our story!What's great about this story besides the characters? Well, the mystery behind the murder and the tangled web the victim left behind... there are a number of suspects for a variety of reasons! However, we are taken through the different suspects and clues - things are always quite surprising. The phrase "the plot thickens" is definitely true here! Also, we are once again taken into Native American culture - a bonus, I believe. I can't say too much or it will spoil your enjoyment of the story.The author has definitely added a new series that will have me hooked! I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy, and I am pleased to share my opinion with you!

This is the first book in a new mystery series. If you like mysteries, you will love this book! If you read Homicide Hideaway, you will remember Fish and Game State Trooper Hawke helped in solving a murder. In this book an owner of a local restaurant is murdered up in his mountains and Hawke finds the body. He asks to help find the killer. I loved how Ms Jager gives pieces of the puzzle as I read through the book. It was so hard for me to understand why any woman would want to have an affair with the married owner of the local restaurant. There were not many people in the town that liked him. There are so many likely suspects who could have killed him. I was surprised at the end who had killed him, and more surprised by what the killer did as a side job. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book.

Solid start to this new mystery series. We meet Hawke who works as a Fish and Wildlife State Trooper which makes his way of doing things quite different yet still intriguing. While on his patrol he finds a dead body. Curiosity wraps him up in the murder investigation even if it's not part of his job. The blend of nature tracking, clues, and the animals makes for a fascinating mystery that is hard to put down. Great for mystery overlooking for something different. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Gabriel Hawke is a Trooper with Oregon Fish and Wildlife, however he finds himself in the middle of a very human murder. This is a tightly plotted story and very fully developed. Nice tricky clues, I didn’t see the identity of the murder coming, but it was played fair. I really liked Hawke as a character and hope to read more of his stories. Besides, Dog and Horse, and a matchmaking landlady? What’s not to love? I rec’d an ARC for an honest review and this is it.

I basically give all these Garfield 3-packs the same rating-- First, it's a really good deal to buy the books this way price-wise. Second, Garfield really inspired my 8 year old son to learn to read a few years ago, and he reads and re-reads these books over and over. Unlike some comic books or made-for-kids books (I'm thinking of things like the comic sections of Captain Underpants), there are no spelling errors or weird slang he won't understand-- Nothing too violent or off-color-- Just Garfield. I can let him read it without worrying about it, and Garfield has become an old friend.

we have many volumes, but for some reason volume 4 falls apart. Tried two books and both had to be tossed.

I used to read garfield all the time when I was little, I had an old copy from my elementary days in my classroom. One day a kid picked it up and could NOT stop laughing. I had to buy more to keep my class under control. They are great for getting some stubborn boys to read :)

My 8 and 11 yr old fought over who was going to get their little grubby hands on this book first... What can I say.... GARFIELD NEVER fails... The vocabulary and not to mention the sarcasm my kiddos have learned from years of reading Garfield.... Priceless.

What a great value!!! My son LOVES reading the funny pages in the paper. I found these and some foxtrot ones for him for his birthday and he hardly puts them down! Great value! Perfect for any funny pages fan my son has gotten HOURS out of this book. He has read and re read over and over will buy more volumes of these for christmas!

My son is not the most "into school" kid-- and he was really struggling in reading-- Was even in Reading Recovery in first grade (last year) for awhile-- And then he discovered Garfield comic books at the library and fell in love with them!-- and he just tested in the 78percentile (meaning, he reads better than 78 percent of kids in our district for his grade)! He LOVES these books and I've bought him a few of these 3-pack books on Amazon (way cheaper than anywhere else!) as gifts for him, just to say "Good job, keep going!" Really, for how thick and colorful the book is-- this is really a nice price. While they (all the Garfield 3-pack books-- which there are many!) are generally paperback, it's a nice sturdy binding and, unlike some of the other books that kids his age tend to be attracted to, I know the words are spelled correctly, the grammar isn't funky-- and there is nothing too racy in it! I say if you can find something that gets your kid reading that meet those criteria-- GRAB IT!

This book, and other Garfield books, are a great step for kids who have grown out of phonics books but are too intimidated to try chapter books. There's not too many words on each page and each page has pictures to provide contextual clues to more difficult words. However, these aren't "babyish" so older kids love to read these as well. Garfield books help my son actual enjoy silent reading time. I love the value of these 3-packs as well.

My 7 year old daughter loves these Garfield Fat Cat 3-packs. She has been spending at least an hour each evening soaking in the lasagna loving cat comics. One item to note is that pack #10, 11 and 12 are slightly less tall books and are in black and white. The others have been in color.

Linus Pauling: Two-Time Nobel Laureate In 1985 Dover reprinted Introduction to Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Chemistry, a well-known older book by Linus Pauling and E. Bright Wilson. The first edition of Pauling's General Chemistry was a short book of less than 250 pages published in 1944, during World War II. Three years later, it had more than doubled in size to almost 600 pages, and the 1953 edition was over 700 pages. Fifteen years later, for the 1970 edition, it reached its final size and configuration at almost 1,000 pages ― and that is the edition which Dover reprinted in 1988. Dr. Pauling's one request at that time was that we keep the price affordable for students. Linus Pauling is of course the only Dover author to win two Nobel prizes, for Chemistry in 1954 and for Peace in 1962; he is the only winner in history of two unshared Nobel Prizes. I have not read this book cover to cover, and I have not read it so thoroughly that anyone should take in too deeply what I think of it. I would not recommend this book to be used as a primary textbook in class. This is not because the explanations and ideas are completely outmoded, but because it is organized differently from how a typical college course is set up - the organization is "old-school" so to speak. I have taken two general chemistry courses, and the contents of this book are very different from what I studied in class. The fundamental ideas are the same, but with a different emphasis and approach; and personally, I like the book's approach better; it is more comprehensive. Pauling does not omit the better mathematics of chemistry (as it was done and is being done in my chemistry courses), thus introducing the reader to the most elegant and most exciting aspects of chemistry.I have not bothered to work on the practice problems which the book provides since I do not have much leisure time to study subjects outside the courses I am taking, so I cannot make any useful comments respecting that.What struck me about the book is its detailed descriptions of the properties of "interesting" atoms and compounds (e.g. hydrogen, iron, ammonia). It struck me because I am beginning to lose interest in chemistry (because of the way it is taught in class), and reading these chapters provides me with reasons to find chemistry interesting as a whole instead of just the chemistry which overlaps with atomic physics. It gives me an "intuitive feel" for the atoms involved - therefore, less memorization; always a plus. And of course, the chapters on thermodynamics and quantum mechanics are superb. Pauling goes through these topics with a depth which would frighten condescending instructors.That being said, I do not think I would have succeeded in class relying on this book alone; it is, as a previous reviewer said, "eccentric". It is an excellent supplement, but I do not believe it will be enjoyed by anyone without prior knowledge of chemistry or who is not taking a course organized the Pauling way.

I am currently a chemistry student in an honors general chemistry course at an Ivy League university, and I can say with certitude that this is an excellent resource for any chemistry student (with a decent knowledge of calculus), especially considering the price. I don't think it best to use as a default textbook for a modern general chemistry course (Oxtoby and Atkins are both very good; I especially like Atkins because I find the explanations superior to Oxtoby, though if you want the more advanced text you should go with Oxtoby, but be aware that it incorporates a lot of physics in its explanations) but as a supplementary resource it is wonderful. Stylistically, it is very easy to read and everything is explained very clearly. You can tell Pauling's audience was his students. I have a great deal of interest in chemistry and I appreciate the history that it provides on all of the experiments and discoveries, which I find to be lacking in most modern sources, like the aforementioned Oxtoby and Atkins. It is exceptional in that it covers so many diverse topics, which is wonderful because general chemistry is so broad, and in particular has a lot of material on biochemistry and quantum chemistry, which makes a lot of sense considering Pauling's achievements in those fields. Its age does show in the some of the notation. For instance, it seems to defer to using formal rather than molar concentrations, which I had never seen previously (they are however, essentially the same thing; formal simply ignores the species in solution and only looks at the initial number of moles of species present, while molar takes into account species present). I just wish there were a solutions manual somewhere.

I purchased this ebook, General Chemistry (Dover Books on Chemistry) as a Kindle Book for $11.49 and feel after going over it in my initial use of the text, that it is a good buy. I am not a student, rather one who took chemistry in High School and College as a non major subject. Chemistry is not a high profile field that interested me at the time I was in school, other than needing to have some knowledge of the subject. Now I am returning to my studies in science, physics and engineering studies, just for the fun of it. This book is putting me where I want to be with my knowledge of chemistry and will surely lead me to further reading and experimentation. I like it a lot.

I am a chemistry teacher and a chemist, with a background in physical chemistry. I have had the good fortune of having some world-class chemists as teachers during my education, who's insight and wisdom I have (with much effort) tried to incorporate into my own teaching style, as they have changed my life in very significant ways. I purchased this textbook after reading many positive reviews, leaving me curious to hear the words from the horses mouth. Although I have only read the first few chapters so far, I can say that this is the greatest inorganic chemistry textbook that I have ever read. Pauling does a beautiful job of synthesizing classic and modern physics in developing the theories of what is now known as Quantum Mechanics -- his approach is from that of pure thermodynamics, and masterfully done, I might add. Never condescending, but coming from a very different level of understanding, reading this book is like watching any master artist creating their art before your very eyes -- genius in it's raw, pure, unadulterated form. The best that any intelligent being can do is sit back and watch the artist do his thing -- in awe.

Pauling was arguably the greatest chemist of the 20th century. His enthusiasm, intuition, and technical chops are all on display throughout this text. I find I can read this for pleasure, which is rare for a textbook. I wore out the binding of my first copy. Feynmann might be a comp. Chemistry as a subject has doubtless advanced since 1970, but I don't think there is much in this book that needs correcting.
