This little gem is a short read. I finished it in approximately seven hours, and that included taking exhaustive notes. It packs short, concise definitions and concrete, actionable takeaways. Truly a breath of fresh air.I’ve read too many books at the end of which I have no clue how to apply the things I’ve learned. This book is not one of them. Every single strategy is immediately actionable and well illustrated with real-world examples.Another thing I really appreciate about this book is its organization. All its strategies are neatly organized into the four major categories of EQ skills for easy look-up and reviewal. I intend to keep this book close at hand for those days I need a quick refresher. Some have mentioned that this book seemed too self-promoting for their taste. I have to admit, there was a bit of this, but it all seemed to be pretty well contained in the introduction and conclusion, so you could skip over it if such things bother you, though I didn’t personally find it distasteful.All-in-all, a very enjoyable, short, and practical read. Highly recommended to anyone interested in emotional intelligence and how they can start improving theirs right away.

I am over 70, a retired teacher and this is the first review I have chosen to write on anything ever including hundreds of books. "Me Bad" is that I didn't research anything about the "book" and ordered based on title. This is NOT a book. It has NO qualifications of a book: no table of contents, no publisher, no footnotes, no quotes and no bibliography. There is NO info about the author on or in the book other than a name. No resume, background, awards won... nada. This IS a 140 page pamphlet with huge print and wide spaces between lines, many grammatical errors and continuous repetition. Nothing but "opinionized generalizations." One learns absolutely nothing. The front cover says "25 proven ways to improve..." but there is no proof of anything and not even a deliniation of 25 ways to improve. The pamphlet ends with this request from the author, "I would really appreciate it if you could just share with me what you have learnt from this book.... Please pop over to amazon and share it over in the review...." I "learnt" nothing and now I am "popping over" to Amazon to say "buyer beware".

I don't think being manipulated is that bad, but only when I want to be if you can't resist other requests, then you must have to find a better way to deal with your manipulative nature. What I have discovered is, the book has clearly explained how to increase self-esteem and to show respect to thyself is the only way to gain others respect. All the tips and strategies are explained nicely, I have found them easy to follow and useful in real life practice. Very much appreciated and recommended to everyone struggling with social life.

This book will help you learn and understand more about Emotional Intelligence. You will be able to know how you will improve your emotional skills for you to free your self from manipulation. The book was written in a very simple way for better and easier understanding.

There is written a well constructed guide book to provide you knowledge about emotional intelligence. In this guide book you will go through the reading of best and proven ways, self awareness and self confidence, such a fabulous guide book.

I really like the easy reading and the exercises well explained. I've already completed the book and am now focusing on the practical exercises!

God advice

There's something else that sets emotionally intelligent people apart from those who do not have this gift. Emotionally intelligent people are aware of their own strengths and weaknesses and can use different emotions to advantage. For example, a poet may be aware that he writes better when he is upset.

The biblical picture of marriage is the blending of two lives in the deepest possible way into a new unit that will both satisfy the individuals involved and serve the purposes of God in the highest possible manner. The heart of mankind cries out for unity. We are social creatures. God Himself said of Adam, "It is not good for man to be alone" (Genesis 2:18). I would remind you that this analysis was before the Fall of man, and that this man already had the warm, personal fellowship of God. Yet God said, "That is not enough!" God's answer to man's need was to create woman, one who could be a suitable helper (Genesis 2:18). The Hebrew word used here is one that literally means "face to face." That is, God created one with whom man could have a face-to-face relationship. it speaks of that kind of in-depth personal relationship whereby the two are united in an unbreakable union that satisfies the deepest longings of the human heart. Marriage was God's answer for man's deepest human need - union of life with another.

I wish I would have read this book before my first marriage. There is so much good information in here for people who are dating seriously, but there is also plenty of great advice for married couples as well.

This is a life changing book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is married or thinking about getting married.

I liked it very much. I don't like the requiement the I need to have a number of words to complete this review. Pain in the but.

I would recommend this book for anyone who thinks they'll never get married. Mr. Chapman gives some really practical advice that applies to new and old marriages

this book was awesome

A great annoyance that I had with the beginning of this book was the concept of "ministry dating", a Christian dating a non-Christian. Chapman points to 2 Corinthians 6:14 as a reason that marrying is not a good idea. He also said that there is a lack of commitment in a Christian/non-Christian relationship. Honestly, the whole thing could backfire and the "unsaved" may be very jaded toward religion if the relationship does not work out. Also, the Christian may be drawn into sin by the non-Christian, after all, sin loves company (see Genesis 3).I still think that this book is worthy of a 4 star rating. There is a lot of practical advice with Biblical back-up. It has really caused me to re-think the role of a wife, but at the same time, it doesn't say that the wife is inferior to the husband, she is his partner, his teammate. The sections of the book that I think I learned the most from where the chapters on sex and money. Both have been perverted by modern day society. Chapman gives practical and Biblical advice in this area. The chapter dealing with in-laws was very eye-opening. I never really considered "Honor thy father and thy mother" when thinking about in-laws. However, it does make sense that if you are talking bad about your MIL, you may cause your husband to dishonor his mother."Who Will Clean the Commode?" - I didn't really give a lot of thought to the duties that each marriage partner would perform, whether it be cleaning the toilet, or paying the bills. I just thought that those things would work themselves out, and perhaps they might have. However, a much better solution would be to assign responsibilities before marriage so each partner knows what the other expects of them. One of the great things about this book is that the "Growth Assignments" at the end of each chapter offer a section for the married and the unmarried. I thought this was very helpful. The last chapter had a couple of annoying spelling errors (I am an editor, I pick up that kind of thing), but not so many that it makes the text difficult to read or understand.

My husband and I have been married for 9 years and had to read this book for an assignment in our training at Rhema Bible Training Center. My husband began to read his book first and would constantly ask me "When are you going to read your book?" To be honest, at first I thought I did not need this book BUT NOW I wish I read it before discussing marriage. This book brings out issues that my husband and I after 6 yrs of dating and a year and a half engagement plus nine years of marriage have never thought to discuss. These vary issues were building blocks that formed an invisible wall we could not see each other over. We had valuable parts of our lives that were effecting us that we were not sharing with one another because we did not know quit what they were or even how to communicate them. I am so thankful for the open communication we gained through this valuable tool. We both kept telling each other, "If we had read this book before marriage we would have saved much heartache and frustration." GLORY! The invisible wall is down and communication has entered such a more intimate and spiritually awakened level. This book is a MUST READ before even getting serious in dating! It helps you to look deep in yourself and see your heart and motives in a relationship as well as what you have to offer to someone else. Before getting engaged, I believe to be 100% effective both people should read and do the assignments in the book. BUT if like my husband and I you did not read this book and had limited communication THIS BOOK is the tool you need to help open you both to a new level of understanding and relating to one another. This book was our highway to a path we had never traveled with one another. I am very thankful this book is available and pray that everyone learns from it. A Happy Healthy relationship is worth everything you put in to it! This book is worth reviewing every 6 months and is fast and easy understanding with wonderful Assignments to encourage open two way bridge of communication that leads you both on the same path to a Loving Relationship of your dreams! Be blessed and encouraged. This book is a gentle tool to open doors to rooms and closets that you did not even know you housed. What a wonderful way to explore your own heart and motives as well as discuss those of your love one.

My wife and I read this book before we got married. It explains how to use Christian principals to relate to marital issues. How to always approach your mate in charity and always resolve situations in the spirit of love and not anger. It gives accounts of how this philosophy has played a role in many marraiges. While this book is good,we enjoyed Dr. Chapman's other book, The Five Love Languages much better.

From the Inside Flap

Poe was one of the most original writers in the history of American letters, a genius who was tragically misunderstood in his lifetime. He was a seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, and exerted a great influence on Dostoyevsky, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, and Charles Baudelaire, who championed him long before Poe was appreciated in his own country. Baudelaire's enthusiasm brought Poe a wide audience in Europe, and his writing came to have enormous importance for modern French literature. This edition includes his most well-known works--"The Raven," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "Annabel Lee," "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue"--as well as less-familiar stories, poems, and essays.

About the Author

Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 in Boston, the son of traveling actors. He published his first book of poems Tamerlane and Other Poems in 1827, followed by Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque (which included "The Fall of the House of Usher") in 1839, but he did not achieve appreciable recognition until the publication of "The Raven" in 1845. He died in 1849.

This is a beautiful presentation of Poe's stories. The book contains "Berenice," "The Black Cat," "The Island of the Fay," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Oval Portrait," "Morella," and "Ligeia"; also, an essay, "Edgar Poe, his life and works" by Charles Baudelaire, and notes. So, you get the usual Poe fare mixed with some of his less-well-known stories. It is sumptuously illustrated, with many pictures in color, some of them double-page, as well as many black-and-white (and red) smaller drawings. The book measures 8" x 11", so it's large enough to provide a good view of the illustrations. There is no dust jacket, but the cover is thick and embossed, and the binding is canvas, so the book should hold up well. Many of the stories are printed in white text on black background, but I had no trouble reading them, even without my glasses.I purchased this book because I like the work of Illustrator Benjamin Lacombe, and I was afraid I'd be disappointed, but I'm delighted with the illustrations, the stories, and their presentation. I was also afraid that the illustrations would be of unhappy, big-eyed Goth girls in unlikely poses, but be assured that the illustrations are a good fit for the content of the book; it's obvious that the illustrations were created for their stories. This book will be kept next to my copy of Poe's tales illustrated by Harry Clarke.

I purchased this arrangement of Poe’s work in large part because of the other reviews that discussed the beautiful art work, however, the book that I received did not have a single illustration....this was going to be a gift and the addition of the artwork was what made this collection stand out. Disappointed.

'Horror,' as it is broadly understood, is defined by two essential elements: the active presence of decay, some 'abnormal' manifestation of nature, or a combination of both. One hundred and fifty-seven years after his early death, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), who made horror the dominant theme of his creative work, remains the American master of the weird tale. Poe's work has had enormous worldwide influence: French poet Charles Baudelaire was an early champion and translator, Poe's 'William Wilson' (1839) haunts the pages of Oscar Wilde's 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' (1890), and several stories look presciently ahead to work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.'The Collected Tales and Poems of Edgar Allen Poe' (1992), which also includes humorous pieces ('The Devil in the Belfry' is a hilarious tribute to the father of American literature, Washington Irving), detective fiction (Irving's 1838 story-cycle 'The Money-Diggers' stirs fluidly beneath 'The Gold Bug'), and early examples of what would come to be known as science fiction, brings together most of the author's important work. Two general narrator (or protagonist/character) types emerge. The first is meticulously rational, calm, and 'objective'--like Dupin, the amateur sleuth who coolly solves the mystery of 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue.' The second, best represented by Roderick Usher in 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' is psychically haunted, deeply subjective, acutely sensitive in every pore, and barely able to repress the hysteria--at best--simmering just beneath the surface of his consciousness. Both general types are isolated and obsessive in their own way--the first perhaps imagines he has found salvation by holding the world at a kind of hard cerebral remove, while the second surrenders his will in increments and sinks obliquely into emotional, spiritual, psychic, and physical fragmentation. The second type (found in 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' 'Berenice,' 'The Black Cat,' 'The Pit and the Pendulum,' and 'William Wilson,' among others) dominates and defines Poe's work.Poe occasionally offers readers a combination of both types, as in 'The Imp of the Perverse,' in which the narrator, after a lengthy, meditative, and 'objective' discourse on the self-destructive aspects of human nature, briefly tells his own story: compelled to commit a pointless murder, he then finds himself equally compelled to publicly confess it.Fatalism and perdition are key characteristics of the author's work: death may await everyone, but, in Poe, death impatiently reaches forward into men's lives, sickening, exhausting, and corrupting them, thus hastening fragile humanity's end. Poe's protagonists are once healthy, now dire, everymen surrounded on every side by hostile, malevolent, and destructive forces which dominate every plateau, division, and category of existence that man has methodically--and rather naively--mapped out. Human instinct proves to be 'red in tooth and claw'; the senses betray; the mind collapses; the borders and boundaries of civilization are violently breached; the natural world reveals a harsh, predatory, and incomprehensible face; physical laws prove unreliable; loving relationships sicken and fester; all agents of stability prove false and slip away. Most of Poe's work suggests that there is no escape for anyone (--"dead to the World, to Heaven, and to Hope!"), and, as several of the tales underscore, including 'The Fall of the House of Usher' and 'Ms. Found in a Bottle,' even the cessation of life may bring no solace for some. However, reprieves are possible: the narrator barbarically tortured by the Spanish Inquisition is freed by the arriving French army at the conclusion of 'The Pit and the Pendulum,' the sailor who experiences 'A Descent Into the Maelstrom' survives to tell of his ordeal, and the vengeful dwarves in 'Hop Frog' apparently escape at that story's conclusion.Remarkably, because of the skill with which he illustrates his view of man's utter lack of genuine choice or ability for self-determination, Poe manages to make most of his characters likeably human, despite their illnesses, eccentricities, and perversions. Though the tales team with toxic bloodlines, incestuous relationships, premature burials, rioting lunatics, marauding plagues, 'tormenting' doppelgangers, parasitic spirits of the dead, animated corpses, "ghoul-haunted woodlands," and a fair variety of additional supernatural tableaus, Poe remains is a remarkably rational, balanced, and economic storyteller, since the ultimate horror lies not in the external threat, but in the narrator's realization that what he is experiencing is the genuine nature of life itself.Poe's tales suggest that, if all of mankind lives within a perpetually collapsing, cannibalizing universe, the most one can hope for is that, in the present, it is collapsing on someone else.

This was a gift from me to my sister, she has been in love with Benjamin Lacombe's illustrations for quite awhile now and she was thrilled to find that this translation into english is available. Since I tried to find Lacombe's work that is not actually written in French. This book is full of darker tone of illustrations, since it is after all, Edgar Allan Poe's writing. It can be seen in every picture with minimum colors (mostly the illustration are sephia toned to give it more profound effect). As for the book condition, this book is quite fragile on the binding, and so when it travels far away, the glue was coming off a bit, but the book is still intact. I really think this was the publisher's part, though. Since the printing was not quite so neat as the other Benjamin's book Les herbier des Fees... But still I am quite satisfied.

This was a gift for my daughter. She had been wanting an Edgar Allen Poe book since her junior year in HS. I think the guy was a bit disturbed, but she finds his stories intriguing.

Words cannot even do justice for how excited I was when I opened this....was expecting a paperback from recent times...git a hardcover printed in 1938 in excellent condition...super fast delivery...very happy

I picked up this book at a good price and it was in great condition for it's age if you like mystery mayhem and macabre Poe wrote some great timeless stories he was also know as the inventor of detective type stories if your not familiar with his work the pit and the pendulum or the tell tale heart are a good place to start a lot of his stories are dark but he led a troubled life and short life but was an excellent writer

If you are a Benjamin LaCombe fan like I am, this book will not disappoint! Well over 50 illustrations, all beautifully rendered in LaCombe's unique style! It's worth buying the book just for the art work, and since I am also a Poe fan, It's double the reward for me!!

I read this at 12 years old and loved it. I decided to read it again since I couldn't remember any details. I loved it all over again. It is a fantastic way to learn about America before the revolution. The characters come alive and so does the landscape. Great for young teens and adults. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Kit Tyler leaves her home in Barbados to travel alone across the ocean to colonial Connecticut in 1687. She has no reason to stay in Barbados with her grandfather dead and buried. With nowhere else to go she undertakes the long boat trip on her own assured that she will be welcome with open arms by her aunt's family. Her arrival doesn't go as expected. Kit's uninhibited childhood in Barbados has left the sixteen-year-old wildly unprepared for life among her Puritan relatives. Her cousins covet her beautiful clothes even while her uncle looks at the bright colors and luxurious fabrics of her dresses with scorn. Kit barely recognizes her aunt, struggling to see any hint of her own mother in her aunt's weather worn face. When she discovers a beautiful meadow near a pond, Kit finds some much needed solitude and a break in the monotonous drudgery of life with her relatives. Kit also finds an unexpected friend in Hannah Tupper, an old woman who is shunned reviled by the community for her Quaker beliefs and rumors that claim Hannah is a witch. As she learns more about Hannah and her life by the pond Kit will have to decide what, if anything, she is willing to give up for a chance to belong in The Witch of Blackbird Pond (1958) by Elizabeth George Speare.Have you ever had a visceral reaction to a book. The Witch of Blackbird Pond is that kind of title for me.This Newbery award winner came to my attention after my aunt gifted me a copy from her days working at Houghton Mifflin when I was in grade school. Like a lot of books back then I motored through it, eventually donated my copy to my school library, and didn't think about it again for years. But because I became a librarian and worked briefly at a bookseller, I encountered this classic title again as an adult.Every time I saw it on a shelf I would feel that jolt of recognition. Yes, this book was one that meant so much to me as a child. It also, if you pay attention to book editions, has had some hideous covers over the years. My most recent rediscovery of The Witch of Blackbird Pond happened when The Book Smugglers featured the book in their Decoding the Newbery series. I enjoyed reading Catherine King's thoughts (and share many of them) but what really jolted me was the cover. Because finally it was the cover I had first read so many years ago!Finding and purchasing that edition prompted me to re-read The Witch of Blackbird Pond. I discovered a lot of the things I remembered loving when I read the story the first time: Kit's determination and perseverance not to mention her friendship with Hannah Tupper. I also love the push and pull Kit has both with her cousins and her suitors. This story is more purely historical than I remembered and Speare's writing is starkly evocative of Puritan New England. For readers of a certain age, The Witch of Blackbird Pond needs no introduction or recommendation. Younger readers will also find a smart, character driven story. Perfect for fans of historical fictions and readers hoping to discover (or rediscover) a charming classic.Possible Pairings: All the Truth That's in Me by Julie Berry, Chime by Franny Billingsley, A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray, Conversion by Katherine Howe, Salt and Storm by Kendall Kulper, Witch Child by Celia Rees, The Caged Graves by Dianne K. Salerni

I'm not much of a history buff. I ended up reading this Newbery award winning book because it was assigned to my 11-year-old son. He was "skip reading" because the story wasn't his cup of tea, and he was having a really hard time understanding some of the themes in it. We enjoyed reading and discussing it together. For students, it's a great blend of history and literature. We spent quite a bit of time talking about Royalists, Colonists, Puritans and Quakers - and their roles in the story. Reading this book really expanded his knowledge of colonial America. There's great character development. We see Kit grow from an impulsive, sheltered, proud young girl to a courageous young woman who is unafraid to buck society's expectations when it means doing what's right. We see what happens when extreme intolerance overshadows compassion.Uncle Matthew's character is interesting. I grew to like him because, despite his rigid political beliefs, he loved and defended his family - including Kit. We alternated between the hardcover, digital text and audiobook. This was a great read!

The Witch of Blackbird Pond was one of my required reading books when I was in sixth grade. I loved it. Now that I have a daughter who will soon be the same age I was when I first read it, I figured I'd buy this book for her. Except, I ended up reading it myself!! I love it even more now!! It's one of those stories that stays with you long after you finish it.

April 6, 2017 – Finished ReadingApril 4, 2017 – Started ReadingReview I loved this story as a child and I love it again now. A different take this time. It was still an adventure of a young girl (Kit) coming to live with her Puritan family all the way from a free roaming life in Barbados after her grandfather's death. Shades of Little Women show up because she also has 2 cousins--one very pretty and outgoing and the other sweet, quiet and crippled. Kit meets up with three young men who all seem to fall for her but she holds out until she actually knows who she loves (Nat). He owns a ship that travels from the Caribbean to Massachusetts yearly, so she is able to live her life in both places half the year. She finds that not all Puritans are cruel but some are and that she doesn't like long church services at least not twice a week. Nor does she like manual labor. :-) The witch in the story is , of course. not a witch. She is an Amish woman who has been shunned by all and branded a witch (literally) on her forehead. She is kind and caring and seems to take in stray and hurting people one by one. She is run out of town when a sickness runs through the village and affects many of the children...some die. So it literally becomes a "witch hunt". With the help of a friend (Nat) she gets away and finds a good and welcoming home with Kit's soon to be husband's family.

I first read this book when I was 10, I found it at my local library. It is a really nice story, with a sweet romance, and a little history mixed in. Perfect for a young girl who enjoys reading. But I still continue to re-read it every now and then...in fact I just read it again last week, and I'm almost 60 years old. I was happy to find it in the Kindle library for purchase, as my hard copy isn't always in my purse. I highly recommend this book.

Engaging historical fiction novel. Clever writing and vivid story line makes this a must-read! The title is a bit of a misnomer, as this is NOT about a witch, but about the puritans who settled into the New World. This story line helps the reader dive into that time period and discover the thought processes that made innocent people become accused of witchcraft (swimming, anyone?).

From Booklist

This concise volume is a part of Facts On File's seven-volume American Popular Music set. With more than 500 alphabetically arranged entries covering history, instruments, leading figures, influential recordings, varying styles and subgenres, vocabulary, and performance techniques, the volume functions as a comprehensive guide to a uniquely American musical form. A very useful "Introducing Jazz" section briefly discusses jazz eras and movements and provides a helpful listening guide for nonaficionados. Most helpful of all, entry headings are cross-referenced throughout the introduction, allowing users to jump right to them. The volume is heavily cross-referenced throughout and has occasional black-and- white photographs. Composer entries begin with birth and death dates and a brief description--for example, "Mingus, Charles (1922-1979) American bass player, composer, arranger, and bandleader." The scope of personages is not limited to Americans or to mainstream or popular artists. For example, Czech guitarist and composer Miroslav Vitous, best known as a founding member of Weather Report, merits his own entry, as do eccentrics Sun Ra and Pharaoh Sanders. Other miscellaneous entries include, for example, Hot Club de France, tone cluster, and the Wire magazine.Six appendixes complete the volume, among them a list of seminal recordings, a historical map of early jazz, and a list of Grammy Awards for jazz. An eight-page glossary of music terms follows the appendixes. "End Notes and Further Reading" includes a fair number of readily available Web documents (interviews, essays, articles, etc.). Finally, a comprehensive index finishes the volume.Functioning more as a dictionary than a detailed and in-depth encyclopedia, Jazz is appropriate as a handy reference volume for high-school, public, and academic libraries. The Hemlock Cup: Socrates, Athens and the Search for the Good Life, by Bettany Hughes

Review

“Fascinating. . . . What Bettany Hughes provides is something vital: a life and times of Socrates that is so richly textured, flavorful and atmospheric that it makes human this most enigmatic of all philosophers. By the end of her book, we can almost see and smell the man, with all of his quirks and foibles and questioning brilliance.” —Walter Isaacson, The New York Times Book Review“Bettany Hughes’ biography is far more than just that: this tour de force is a vivid political and social history of Athens in the 5th century BC. Hughes evokes a city steeped in change, looking past the Golden Age of democracy, new wealth and power to the reality of  a century tempered by war and infighting. With the plan of his life as a backbone, the book covers the whole experience of 5th-century Athenians, yet paints a picture of Socrates as a marvellous eccentric, paddling the streets barefoot, conversing with strangers and refusing to conform . . . this approach produces an extremely exciting narrative. Descriptions of Athens’ legal system aren’t dry but dripping with colour; the city itself is dirty, smelly, defiantly alive. And what other historian has spared a thought for the buttock pain of ancient jurors sat on hard stone seats in court? This is not a study of Socrates’ philosophy but his world. As thought-provoking as it is thrilling, the book is a beacon for the relevance and interest of classics today.”  —The Times (London) “Bettany Hughes’s terrifically readable life of Socrates is more than just a life; it is also an evocation and explanation of the world that created him, and over which he would come to have such influence. . . . The Hemlock Cup makes a vivid and persuasive case for the study of Socrates as a valuable means to understanding how our way of thinking about our own world came to be, and a guide to how we might understand it better.” —The Independent on Sunday (UK) “A beguiling book. . . . Hughes triumphs again. This is history, and historical reconstruction, exactly as it should be written. . . . The Socrates Hughes creates is ultimately a towering yet intensely human figure. He lives and speaks again in these pages: It’s a singular accomplishment.” —The Washington Post “Delightful . . . Hughes presents a high-octane account of Socrates and his age. . . . Do read this book, both because of its marvelous storytelling and because it will stimulate a desire to learn more about the ancient world.” —The Wall Street Journal  “Bettany Hughes has done it again; she brings to life not only Socrates himself but the whole of Periclean Athens. Here is a work of dazzling erudition which remains hugely readable—what more can one ask?” —John Julius Norwich, author of Byzantium  “No one before Bettany Hughes, a highly accomplished communicator, has thought to weave Socrates’s examined life into quite so rich and dense a tapestry of democratic Athens’s teeming high-cultural and mundane experience. . . . Hughes’s enormous energy and enthusiasm are infectious.” —Paul Cartledge, The Independent (UK) “An invigorating, tremendous work of scholarship. . . . A smart and entertaining ‘biography’ of Socrates as shaped against the great experiment of democracy in 5th-century BCE Athens. . . . Hughes thrillingly navigates the life stages of her subject.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred)“A compelling study of an exceptional man’s relationship with the one community that had a hope of understanding and accepting him. There’s some terrific and passionate writing about a philosopher whose heroism is unquestionable; and as lively and learned an introduction to classical Athens as you could want.” —The Daily Telegraph (UK)“This is a lucid, erudite, and compelling work that brings Socrates and his city to life, offering a fresh and illuminating perspective on their times . . . A fruitful melding of informed and nuanced historical narrative and personal observation that succeeds marvelously in realizing its bold ambition.” —Weekly Standard “The brilliant cultural historian Hughes has again produced an intriguing and entertaining biohistory of one of the most important individuals in the ancient world. . . . She brings to life the social, political, economic, literary, and military realities of Socrates’ society, in particular the centrality of the agora, [and] aptly conveys the continuing urgency of Socrates’ devotion to the inquiring mind.” —Publishers Weekly (starred) “There are certain historical figures whose lives merit perpetual reexamination because their impact continues to reverberate century after century. . . . Not only a lively and eminently readable biography of Socrates the man, but also a vivid evocation of Athens, the city-state on the cusp of originating many of the greatest precepts of modern Western civilization.” —Booklist  “One can plunge enthusiastically into the seething world inhabited by Socrates that Hughes recreates for us. . . . This is the grand sweep of Athenian history during its most politically inventive and culturally exciting period. . . . Irresistible.” —Literary Review (UK)   “The life of Socrates becomes a peg from which to hang a vivid depiction of Athens in its golden age, from the pinnacle of its greatness to the abyss of its ultimate defeat. . . . Hughes’s prose is the literary equivalent of CGI, re-creating for the reader a sense of the clamour and dazzle of the classical city that has rarely been bettered. . . . Hers is an ancient Greece that is authentically cutting-edge.” —The Observer (UK)

The trial and death of Socrates stands alongside that of Jesus of Nazareth as a milestone in our civilization. What these deaths signify is far from clear. Neither man wrote memoirs about what he taught. Both were killed by political authorities intent on doing what politicians always do - keeping order. And both deaths have spawned passionate debate and interest thousands of years after each man breathed his last. Why we do care about these deaths?Bettany Hughes' The Hemlock Cup: Socrates, Athens and the Search for the Good Life provides an answer of a sort. "Home sapiens," she writes, "craves the anonymity of the herd. All of civilization's darkest hours have been bayed on by men who want scapegoats, who want the finger of blame to turn in any direction, as long as it is away from their own face. Loose, jealous tongues are the bane of history." That, at least, is a compelling reason for why Socrates was condemned to death in 399 B.C.E. (The vote among the 500 jurors sitting in his case was close as to guilt regarding the crimes charged, neglecting the Athens gods and corrupting its youth - 280-220; the vote in favor of death as a penalty was 340 to 160.)Athens lost the Peloponnesian War to Sparta, its population was decimated by disease and war attrition, and the imperial tribute that fed the leisure of its citizenry had dwindled to a trickle. And Socrates was the friend of Alcibiades, a sometime friend, sometime enemy of the city. Surely a scapegoat was needed. Socrates, the infamous Socrates of Plato and Xenophon, was just too different. The Delphic Oracle had reportedly declared no man to be wiser; yet the philosopher proclaimed that he knew no truth. He wandered the streets shoeless, debating endlessly and offending with delight. Socrates, implacable Socrates, philosophized while Athens burned. "We strive for answers, for closure; but all Socrates does is ask questions."Hughes brings ancient Athens to life, weaving the setting for Socrates' life out of historic records and recent archeological evidence. The tone of the book is not the sort of ponderous scholarship often encountered in serious works on ancient Greece. It is rather playful; she is a wit at work and at play, trying to make sense of the life and death of philosophy's founding father. The book caught me off guard, her breezy and almost playful tone put me off at first, but I could not put the book down, even though I profess not to like the writing. How like Socrates this book must be: not altogether pleasing in form, but irresistible. In recent years, I've struggled with the question presented by the historical Jesus. What can we know about this man? Can we know anything? There is so much more written about Socrates by contemporaries, and Plato's dialogues, whether fictive in whole or in part, at least have the ring of truth: he was a witness to what he wrote about. We have no eyewitness accounts of the life of Jesus, only Gospels written decades after his death and by men who never broke bread with the man -- nothing admissible, as we lawyers like to say. Why the great need to know about a man who cannot be known, and the easy acceptance of something less than knowledge as to Socrates? One claimed that he was the truth and that to know him was to be set free. He was killed by Roman overlords. Socrates claimed to know nothing save that the unexamined life was not worth living. He was killed by fellow citizens. Perhaps the deaths have little in common. Yet they remain two of the most profound political executions in the history of the West. Hughes has nothing to say about this, of course. Her focus is the Athenian. I will shelve the book this afternoon, but I will miss it a great deal. She's also written a volume on Helen of Troy. I suspect I will soon be in Hughes' hands again. Can she be persuaded to take a try at the death of Jesus?

A wonderfully written life of the most important philosopher of all time. The author provides in depth details of Socrates' life and a thorough description of life in ancient Athens at the height of it's power and it's decline. She provides a detailed description of the profound weaknesses faced by all democratic societies and how they historically lead to tyranny.

How better for what it purports to be. The characters I have studied for so long came alive and became immediate familiars.. The mix of the past and present locales, sites and activities raises the book from mere historical fiction to a felt reality. I certainly felt many times that I could walk out my door and be a citizen of Socrates' Athens. In fact I was concerned with how I would choose to vote at his trial. Not as easy as you might think if you are there then. Wish I had read this before all the others. Would have changed my understanding and perceptions of them. Thank you Bettany Hughs!

Just on the last few days of a month travelling around Greece, reading this book and walking in the footsteps of Socrates. The author has done a great job of bringing the times of 5 th century BC alive for me. Also interesting with current time of Greek Financial Crisis due to hold referendum tomorrow. We have loved Greece and the Greek people, so hospitable and family orientated. We are seeing the plebiscite in action in the land where this approach first started, but also where Socrates in the book is reported to have stated that the most valuable thing is in life is time for " leisure". I highly recommend the book and also a holiday to Greece to help them in these difficult times.

A wonderful compilation of historical sources, archaeology, and expert sources which bring Athens and Socrates back to life. Enjoying the book.

As expected.

Much more of a history on Athens during the mess that was the peloponesian war than about Socrates himself but this is because there isn't much known about the man. Like she says in the intro, writing about him is like a donut, lots of heavy caloric filling matter with a hole in the middle where the main character should be. That being said , I learned a lot about Athens and Greek history / thought , and got an idea of what an amazing man Socrates must have been to have lived through things like the war expeditions, the terrible plague, the besiegement by Sparta, and the tyrants that followed when her walls were torn down. He says that he just kept on living the way that he always had when the people were starving in the city as the Spartans surrounded Athens. He refused to condem innocent men to death on 2 occassions despite the huge risk to his own life for doing so. Anyway great book , gave 4 stars cause the little archaeology descriptions about these modern day locations weren't really of much interest.

This book is a must read for anyone who enjoys learning about the Bronze Age or reading historical fiction about that era. Socrates was such a prominent figure. His legacy has survived, resonating soundly into the present. This book makes his impact understandable. It contains delightful descriptions and scenes of this one man's life in all of its aspects; the soldier, lover, husband and philosopher. Bettany Hughes writes powerfully about the role of women and slaves in democratic Athens. Her attention to detail is spot on. I especially enjoyed her infrequent ramblings about geology and volcanism when describing the islands of Melos and Delos. I will read this book again someday.
